It's kinda' like staying at a hotel that has a high school band staying there with 85 freshman kids running up and down the hallways slamming the room doors constantly.

I will also avoid a travel plaza if it's got buses there. I remember being starving and I stopped at a travel plaza on the NY Thruway and it was pretty dead, not too busy,no buses ,and went in to use the restroom and when I came out 5 minutes later 4 buses pulled in full of teenagers and the place was jammed,I just got in my truck and left.
Some places do pay the bus drivers to stop and feed them for free . Anyone remember the old Red Apple restaurant on old 17 just north of Tuxedo NY. I remember going there with my family as a kid when we would go upstate NY. It was always packed with people and buses.
I just finished reading a book by the late owners daughter documenting the history of the restaurant and the owner borrowed $15k in the 1930's ( the price of 3 houses back then) to build big beautiful bathrooms and then contracted with Greyhound and other bus lines to make it a regular stop. He always took care of the bus drivers.
I always loved that place when I was a kid,it sadly has been closed for a long time now. That place in its heyday has always inspired me ,and was one one of the reasons I owned a few restaurants back in the 90's . Tough business, and swore I'd never buy another one until I had the opportunity to buy a place I've been trying to buy for over ten years last year. I bought the closed Roods Creek Diner on Route 17 between Hancock and Deposit. It used to be called Whites Quickway back in the day. May and Johns Truckstop is right across the street. It's been closed
For a while and dilapidated. My Diner is in pretty decent shape ,needs some work ,but not too bad,(it's the picture up above) The county owns the May and Johns property now and they stock pile stone and stuff there sometimes . That intersection was going to be eliminated by the state for the interstate 86 conversion of route 17. They decided to leave the intersection in place and put the property up for sale. I bought it from the person who bought it from the state.
Where going to start working on it this spring to get it open. One of my biggest concerns is not about surviving business wise,I think it will do ok ,as my past places were successful before I sold them , my biggest concern is having a business on the highway with public bathrooms and the incredibly nasty things people will do to them and not think twice.Lol!Blue jeans, efolchi4235 and Hulld Thank this. -
I travel through that area often and will surely support it.
Just make sure you have plenty of truck parking and it will be great.
Good luck with your endeavor and I’ll be watching for it to open.roadtech Thanks this. -
There's some truck parking there ,but not a lot. We're still working on the concept of the restaurant and what type of set up we want to have. Got to get to work on it this spring. Hope to see you there!Hulld Thanks this. -
