This is really not new. Departments across the country have used "Reserves" for years. These are usually folks who have the training to be certified, but for whatever reason do not choose to do it as a career. Or they are folks who have gone through the training and just waiting to be picked up by a department.

A lot of departments use civilian volunteers to do paper work, traffic control in certain situations and non-violent misdemeanor reports.

Much like there is a surplus of drivers,.... there seems to be a surplus of people with the proper law enforcement training that will volunteer just to be able to put the experience on a resume,....At least around here there is anyway,..

Back in the late 60's, early 70's my town in Jersey was so quiet they didn't have a police department. The 66 sq. mi. town was patrolled by 3 state troopers. As those darned New Yorkers moved south, they brought there crime and bad kids with them. :biggrin_25510:

The town had no choice but to train volunteer police through the local state trooper barracks. My dad was one of the first to sign up. As a former drill sargeant during the Korean War I guess he was an ideal candidate. :yes2557:
