Is this indicative of a blown head gasket? We had a thermostat stick and the truck dumped out the coolant. Got the red warning light and pulled over immediately. Let it cool down and got it too a T/A. We had the thermostats replaced and now its blowing white smoke. We replaced the coolant cap about 30 days ago and now it also won't hold pressure. I'm guessing the system was over pressured and now the head gasket is bad.

Any advice or help is appreciated, including how much to get it fixed!

usually, white smoke IS an indication of coolant being burnt...

could have a cracked head, cracked block, leaking liner, blown head gasket.

get it into a shop ASAP, and tow it, don't run it, you don't wanna cause any more damage.

If you have a Maxxforce, they have a "dry deck" head gasket, where no coolant passes through it. You likely have a failed egr cooler, but that depends on what engine you have.

How much does that cost to replace? Shop rate is $150 hr. Are there after market ones that will last longer?

I am not aware of aftermarket ones. The repair can take a solid day, sometimes longer if everything is seized and coming apart horribly.

HeavyD I have a 2014 prostar with the maxxforce. Just had egr cooler replaced few weeks ago and the throttle body valve replaced. I was blowing white smoke from Denver to rock springs Wyoming mostly coming up inclines and my turbo gauge wouldn’t go past a little over 30 on incline and I would lose power and speed and I’m very light right now so I should be climbing with no loss of speed and turbo seems to be only working halfway. But on flat land I’ll cruise 75 no problem and little smoke. Any ideas ?

EGR coolers leak coolant to the exhaust, which contaminates the DOC and leads to DPF plugging. The white smoke you saw is likely incomplete burnt fuel from a passive regen while you are driving because the DOC is degraded, which is leading to a plugged DPF and therefore a restricted exhaust system causing the low boost and power. Removal and cleaning of the DOC is sometimes successful, but be prepared it is degraded too far and needs to be replaced. The DPF will need to be baked and cleaned too. The aftertreatment injector should also be cleaned, spray tested as well.
