I got a Blackberry Curve 8310 and can't use it as a tethered modem without paying almost as much (maybe $5 cheaper) as an aircard.

Guess I know what phone to get for my next upgrade.

One thing you need to remember, no matter what cell phone plan you go with, it will always work better in large towns and near the interstates. Companies are slowly filling in their coverage but......small towns are a pain for getting coverage.

Actually GPRS is the slowest of those listed. Edge is the next best. "HSPD" (actually HSDPA/HSUPA) is a 3G technology (as in they're one in the same).

If you're with a CDMA carrier, you're either going to get 1xRTT or 1xEVDO. 1xRTT provides speeds comparable to EDGE. 1xEVDO provides speeds comparable to HSPA (HSDPA/HSUPA).

Then of course there's WiMAX and LTE, which aren't largely deployed yet.

I've had Sprint, Verizon, and now AT&T. My preference is AT&T, hands down. They really do have more bars in more places, LOL.

Caveat: I don't use my phone that much (Qualcomm gets most of my work done), so I have 450 minutes/month, unlimited data (internet), and 200 text/month, and it only costs me 80-90 bucks per month. And, of course, AT&T has rollover of all unused minutes, so I doubt I'll ever run out of minutes.

Main reason I like them is the coverage-you really have to be in the woods to have no signal.

If you do go with AT&T, be sure you go with their Nationwide plan. Otherwise, I think, you may be charged roaming. I don't know this for certain, so it would be best to talk with one of their sales folk.

Check your phone. You may well be able to use it tethered via USB to connect to the internet.

    - Bring up your start menu

    - Select programs

    - Look for "Internet Sharing"

-- If you have the internet sharing screen, click on it, (if not, look for something
    similar to below)

-- You should have two selections to make from this point:

    -- PC Connection (select USB)

    -- Network Connection (select AT&T)

    -- Select "Connect"

Try this, and see if it works. I'm not familiar with your particular phone.
