I have a 1998 Meritor 10 speed. It shifts great but does not go into HI range when switched. Normally when you slip the selector you hear the noise, but now, nothing.
I drove it home at 20mph for about 30min. After making a stop at the light, and trying to slip to HI range it started to work. I don't want to get stuck in a low range, any idea what it could be? Mechanic told its most likely synchronizer in the back and Meritor makes a kit to fix it. Estmiates $1k for the job...

Do you hear air escaping out of the valve when you switch from low to high range?

Might want to start with the air supply the that valve on the tranny. You should hear air come out of the vent.

There's a fix for that, someone familiar with Rockwell Meritor , which was very common before about 2005, should be able to put the updated range shift mechanism on it.

I had one stick in high range, getting it moving is the problem then..

Another had it stuck in low, he drove a long ways, that way.

Both were fixed in our company shop, and the one I had lost the fix when they finally replaced the trans with a reman.

Yes. It might need replaced or cleaned out. I would replace it with a new gasket. I think they are about 100 bucks

If the synchro was bad, would there be air noise?

Synchronizer is internal to the tranny. The valve is on the back external.
