I usually spend a month a year on Oahu at a house that we've had forever in our family. We love visiting for the month, but living there would probably not work. For most people it's just too expensive, and I just don't see how anybody could survive there on $20 or less an hour, I live in the northern California wine country, arguably one of the top 5 most expensive places to live in the US, and Hawaii is much worse. Real estate is about the same as where I live, but everything else costs much more. Last summer I bought a small chuck roast, a couple potato's, an onion and carrots to make at home. It was over $60 for for those things.

#1 son is hiking on Hawaiin Islands for a couple more weeks at the moment and seems many folks live off the grid which may be popular for the folks not earning 6 figure earnings.

For the budget minded on vacation in Hawaii the warehouse clubs (Sam's Club or Costco, I forget which) sell most items in Hawaii for the mainland prices. Even their cheap cafe food. Get a slice of pizza and a drink for a couple bucks.
Also, Southwest Airlines is moving to daily flights to Hawaii in 2019 so Alaska Airlines and Hawaiin Airlines (I might be wrong about them) are desperately going to try and undercut Southwest fares to the islands to keep them a small player. The podcast I listen to says FINALLY in 2019 it will be cheap to fly to paradise. -

My comment has to do with the fact that the weather changes very little and it gets boring as hell to be there everyday with the same thing happening, comfortable nights, rainy morning and warm day ... every day. Those who went there and stayed are outdoor type people who do different things outside everyday, those who went there and came back the lack of weather changes were the number one reason. Politics, attitude and spam were not even a consideration. All those who came back said paradise isn't paradise.
If you are as old as I am, then you would remember a show called night gallery, and Alice Cooper was on an episode about hell. He purposely killed himself off to go to hell but hell was sitting in a room watching old farts review their vacation movies. Pretty much what one said it was like for her.
For me I would not want to live on Maui for personal reasons, the big island is where I was told I would enjoy life, and looked at property there which was cheaper there than other places in the country for the same size lot. As for the weather, I would love a consistent weather, I hate change. -

Recaps don’t last because of the heat so most people run off brand tires. The lava rock is very abrasive so unless you’re 100% on highway your tires will get destroyed in about 60k miles.

This is basically what my wifes cousin said, as well. When she moved back to Minnesota, from Hawaii. And she was an RN.
She and her parents have since moved to California, to be near her sister. She has mentioned that she loves it in Kommiefornia.
