Shoot me now please........

I just started a new job as a yard dog at a paper mill. We get a lot of foreign drivers coming in who speak little to no english and have a hard time following instructions. Not to mention many of them can’t back a trailer to save their soul. Then you have all the poor saps who can’t get loaded/unloaded because of shotty trailers, holes in the walls, broken crossmembers, flat tires, etc. It can be frustrating.

Despite all of that, I try to be nice to them and have a little patience. Who knows what kind of conditions some of these guys had to endure in their home countries. Then to travel to a strange new land, learn the language, learn the laws and the customs, and learn how to drive a big truck on top of all that, I think that type of determination is admirable. I could never do it.

The guy in this vid is pretty bad though... I mean wow, you gotta draw the line somewhere. Somehow the flipflops just makes it that much worse.

The camera person deserves a gold medal for patience.

 

If I wasn't on e log, I'd have time to help more.

I think just a guy, or guys trying to scratch out a living.

 

One is only a bigot, racist, or prejudiced if they make it seem like they are the only ones that do the aforementioned things in your post. In any event, regardless of color I'm just saying that this video says a lot about how quickly people get turned out upon getting a CDL. You heard the surprised tone in the other guy's voice when he saw this guy was a driver. All we can do is just try to help these folks. Getting frustrated doesn't help anything

 

If you wanna make the training argument, I don't know how anyone is turned loose without some winter driving experience.

Start there.

I don't have a problem with anything here EXCEPT the sandals and no gloves........

We all needed help in some form in the beginning, I Don't like the his choice of attire for obvious and safety reasons- I would have shown him what a work shoe/boot looked like without being rude .

 

Wholeheartedly agree. I know I began training in January with loads going through snow in Colorado and Utah with cold and snow and incredibly dense fog at times. That would make all the difference

 

What's the big deal about no gloves? I never wear gloves to unhook from a trailer, or even to open the doors, hell I don't even wear gloves to fuel

 

When I was running up to Calgary all the time we were reloading at small yard that Tolko was using so we didn’t have to go up to Slave Lake. It was a small yard, 1 super B could pull in and turn around and then 1 53 could back in off the street to load. Everything worked fine for weeks until someone filed a complaint saying the employees at the reload yard were being racist because they were pulling empty 53’s into the yard before the loaded super B’s.

When I got my license hooking/unhooking was part of the test. Automatic fail if you mess it up.

No comments about there being a half trailer width between him and the next trailer?

At least the guys knows when to ask for help.

 

So much is not discussed in training schools or OTJ training periods. So many of the small things that are taken for granted. Or maybe he was absent that day.

But there’s no need to belittle the individual in situations such as this. And was the video camera or body cam really necessary to make him feel even worse?
