oh please.... if they ask you for your log out of the truck tell them hell no... you don't have to cough up anything but in I.D. to a cop and he'd better have a pretty good reason beyond I thought he might have a truck parked at the j and I wanted to see his book, if he had one... lol
what log book??? I'm just p'ing on the tires...
which btw they can toss you in jail for...lol but not refusing to show a log book if you aren't driving and aren't in the truck... and they haven't pulled you over so they know you been driving it and just got out of it...

Can you even be compelled to produce a logbook when you are off-duty?
I'm not going to search the regs. (someone else can though
), but the explanation on a J.J. Keller logbook says:
Now, they are specifically speaking of previous day's copies, but the same verbiage would be applicable to the current day. Therefore, if you are not on duty, the answer to produce your logbook would be; "No." -

How do they know you are off duty ? You can't just pull in a truckstop , park , and say you are off duty . They usually don't go on truckstop lots anyway but a lot of them check log books at rest areas .

so there is one truck at the rest area and fifty cars or vice versa...
the cop approaches individuals on what profile and asks, "are you a truck driver because if you are I want to see your log book to make sure you aren't p'ing when you should still be driving?"
well actually officer I'm wiping, does that go on line 2 ? or does it still count as number one?
unless there has been some wrong doing and you fit the potential description, your truck fits, or some other real and extinuating circumstances, nobody is bothering you at the rest stop either.
now they may be spot checking logs and ask tp peek as you pull in... but...???

I mean, this dot guy is a government employee gs nothing... I'm sure some work a little harder than others... but ain't nobody out playing grudge match.
they are people... and like most people unless you are being stupid, they are more than happy to keep driving around in the a/c for summer and the heater blasting all winter...
you ever notice how most scales are closed during snow storms??? gee's prime weather for tail-lights not being visible...
but then they'd have to come out of the shack, point at the light, and listen to you whine...
much easier to tell you over the speaker if they say anything at all until the next day and you're still driving around with last tuesdays snow on board the lenses...lol
now if they do an inspection with the creeper... well he done got told he had to so many of them to pay his way... probably even got suggested what he should focus on this week...
and he's under there and the trucks dirty and so is he, and bingo, there's a gig...
we really gotta quit "big brothering" and "demonizing" these guys...

I been dot'd 3 times, had my log looked at a half dozen times, and the worst I ever got was a warning on a chaffed air line and a have a nice day outta the guy...
well that's my .02 cents worth...
well that and if your company is screwing you on maintenance they will get to when they can (never).
pull around back and go tell the demon what is going on... he will make sure the company gets it fixed and none the wiser as to why he noticed the problem... 10-4 -
Well the general concensus is violation.The sad part is most are okay with this.Even sadder part is that alot of your peers will try to cause trouble for you over this IF they could.Welcome to the new world...

Well that takes the prize for the biggest bunch of nonsense I ever read . Truckers all over the country complain of not enough parking spaces and you say a rest area will have 50 cars and only 1 truck . You say you won't be bothered but your profile says you've been a trucker a year and you say in that year you've been DOT'd 3 times and had your log book checked half a dozen times .
Then you act like they aren't serious about Level 1 inspections . Go to Safersys.org , check the company snapshot of any large carrier and you'll see hundreds of trucks and drivers that were put out of service .
You've made some good posts but this sure isn't one of your better ones . -
Folks, as I said in an earlier post, it really boils down to what your log book says. If it says you are off duty then you're off duty. If it says you're in the sleeper, then you should be in the sleeper.
99 times out of 100, where drivers get in trouble with a cop is the attitutude the driver projects to the officer. Come on strong and bad - cop's gonna give you a rough time. Be nice, ask why should you have a log book since you ain't hauling logs (no offense to you stick haulers out there). Chances are if you take the latter option, he'll probably do nothing more than say have a good day or night (unless you are at the chicken house itself or parked in a place where you shouldn't be).
A pleasant attitude can do wonders - not just with the police, but also with shippers and receivers.
Do you have to show your log book to an officer upon their request? My bet is yes. Mind you I'm not a lawyer. -
