    We have a couple hydraulic but honestly, with the hassle of dealing with the motor, getting gas for it, dead battery so having to pull start it etc. I'll stick to mechanical. I will say that you can do a mechanical with a normal 5th wheel setup, I did for years however if you really want to make things much less work with one you need this-

    If you think you might ground out with a mechanical you take it slow and if you do start to go to ground (high center) you flip this switch, BACK OUT, and go a different way.

    Knock on wood, I've been pulling RGN's off and on since I was a teenager at our farm and I have never got high centered to the point that I wasn't able to get myself out without outside help. And every time I have grounded it's been with a mechanical.

    IMO if you run a hydro a wet line is they way to go. I could see a pony motor if you have multiple trucks pulling the trailer

    Every Ritchie Bros. auction I have attended has had two or three new Witzcos for auction. I have always wondered if they (Ritchie) aren't in kahoots with Witzco, and buy back the trailers if they don't bring enough.

    And those are the reasons I’m not into it- my area of operation is a lot smaller than yours: hence my likelihood of having to do it more times a day goes way up.

    Plus, squish the front of the trailer into the ground just a #### hair loading it, and with the mechanical it turns into a project to rehook. If longer runs are the work, or going places where you aren’t roadside blocking a lane of medium to heavy traffic; I spose mechanical is perfectly fine.

    Not that I’m exceptionally experienced in lowboy work: what I have done tells me a few load n unloads a week or mostly crane load and unloads I’d pick a mechanical- loading and unloading multiple times a day I’d have a hydro neck and wet kit 100%.


    ...... also, anybody got a lead on a good condition 35 ton hydro neck, 24+’ in the Well, airride, outriggers, Under $50k?

    Yeah, with 30+ different trucks in the company that might "possibly" pull one of them, the pony is the only viable solution.

    If I were to have my own equipment, it would be a hydraulic with a wet kit. Could care less about weight because 99% of the time your either hauling something permitted anyway or it's so light weight really isn't a factor.

    Hey hey hey driver, some us poor folk gotta run what ya brung. Cant afford no high buck hydraulic stuff

    There are times that it's a challenge to get back under my mechanical trailer. It wouldn't be hard to destroy a driveline or rearend trying to pick a heavy loaded Mechanical trailer back up if you didnt have decent ramps or know how to drive easy

    Not trying to pick on the guy, but the picture of Kevin Rutherford that @sawmill posted the other day is a prime example. No good traction, no RGN ramps, minimal experience. Picking that trailer back up with a 50,000lb load setting on it could suck badly in my opinion
