In shifting a 10 speed all day, I mainly float the gears. Acelerate, pull the selector to nuetral, and quickly place in next gear up. Best done when the rpm drops about 300 rpm from the high that was used in previous gear. To downshift, quickly move selector to neutral, goose the fuel pedel, and the rpm up, place selector in next lower gear. Again downshift floating is best done quickly, and the rpm must be higher than where you were in the previous gear used

Just takes practice, after a little time, you will shift by ear, without much thought about it, good luck!

Man you guys have been doing this too long and you are making it sound easier than it is. Floating is an art to me.
when upshifting I don't even let off the gas all the way, I just reduce the pressure on the pedal enough to get the rpms right where they need to be to grab the next gear. I will take the tack to 15-1600 in the low side, 1600-1800 on the high side (only that high if loaded heavily getting on a freeway or something). And I see people "claiming" they can float, they just push on the shifter <GGGGGRRRRRIIIINNNNDDDDD> until the gear goes in. I feel that this is very bad for the truck and anyone who does it should go back to double clutching. Alot of times when I have my window down at a toll booth, when I am leaving, I can hear the truck next to me doing exactly this when he is shifting.
    Downshifting
I brake down to about 1000rpm.
sometimes I clutch to pull out of gear, sometimes I giva a very gentle tap on the accelerator to get into nuetral.
I rev the engine to the proper range, not just a big ol VROOOOM, but I rev to around 1400 or 1500, exactly. I know where to click the gear in, and I click it in at the right time, no GGGGRRRRRINNDDDD-BOOM, like some people I have witnessed doing this.
Floating is an art. Especially if you drive team and the dude behind you is trying to sleep.
I hope this helps whoever reads it. Floating is easy to do. But it is an art to do it properly.

"Newer trucks are a pain and trucks that havn't been driven a lot because the transmission has not been broken in yet eventually you should be able to do this with the th jake brake on the entire time"

I had this very problem with a truck I had driven for months. 18 speed.

I took my vacation and some n00b got in my truck and ripped out the transmission, so when I got back it had a new one.

I had to learn to shift the new one again. went from smooth shifter to moron in 0.3 seconds.

Know new Volvo takes almost 30K miles to break in a 10-sp. Usually Pete's come out-of-the-box easy shifting!
