Has anyone received a pre-hire letter and been denied employment? I've just obtained my DPA, set to begin week 2, and have a couple of companies that seem interested, one of which was my 1st choice. Should I keep pumping out apps, or is the pre-hire for said company pretty solid?

If you read through the posts you will see prehire is by no means a guarantee of employment . It only means you have been accepted for orientation . Many go home from orientation without being hired . Try running prehire in the search here .
tngatorfan Thanks this. -
I was prehired by Werner. Lots of letters & then they changed their minds. Prehire means nothing!

I know it doesn't guarantee employment, I should have rephrased that. I've read many, many posts about people leaving, or getting sent home from, orientation early. I am wondering how solid the pre-hire is regarding orientation. Can I count on going to orientation after receiving the conditional letter, based on the fact that everything checks out? Am I likely to get the runaround when I call the recruiter to confirm? I realize that becoming an employee upon completing those two weeks is up to me alone, and I can't wait to get started. They've been saying over and over again in school that we, as recent grads, are recruiting our future employer. I can't see how that could be true in this economy. Seems we should all take what we can get, especially as newbies, just to get some miles OTR. Any advice on how to handle the recruiters?

With a grain of salt, until you get a confirmation of a bus ticket.
Just nod you head and say yes to everyone of them. Most won't throw a contract at you, anyway. You're free to go where ever, until you commit to attending an orientation.
Once you have an orientation date, then you're golden. Until that time, you're still trolling the waters waiting on the fish to bite.Tran Man and tngatorfan Thank this. -
Working "at will" of the employer means they can stop the hiring process anytime, and many employers do. it is a good sign, when the company actually spends money on you, then they are serious.

Make sure you have a clean MVR and no criminal convictions . I've heard of people being rejected at orientation for 10 year old misdemeanor convictions .
Make sure your blood pressure is lower than 140/90 , knowing almost everybody's goes up a little when they are in a doctor's office . Don't drink caffeine before you DOT physical and if possible walk and exercise shortly before the physical . -
No criminal history, BP was 130/70 at time of DOT physical, though I'm sure I'll go through a company physical and screening a second time prior to, or as of orientation. One ticket on MVR which is on all my apps. If that ticket was gonna hold things up, surely I would know before making travel arrangements to get to orientation, right? It's right there with the rest of the information that led to the prehire. Thanks to all for the help. will be in touch with my recruiter in the next couple of days, will post if and when orientation is scheduled.

Pre Hire means and guarentees that you recieved a letter that says pre hire on it. And now it is worthless than it was before they printed on it.If you go off to the next state for a job make sure you have a way home. Bus ticket or something... I have seen companies transport new hires like to Phoenix from Los Angeles. When the guy could not pass the Prehire physical, he was basicly fired (only never really hired) and stuck in Phoenix. So very very careful, Wabbit.
