    Ahhhhhhh, The 13th Warrior...

    A true Mans movie.

Occasionally I’ll find myself listening to the soundtrack to get myself in the mood to tarp a PITA load.

Thanks for that memory jog, Six.

Gotta ask, did you have to check how to spell Coeur D’Alene? I used to live North of there in Sandpoint, and still had problems spelling it.

He was Bob Dole's pilot for 40 years. Somewhere I have a letter from Dole on US Senate letterhead thanking me for "helping" during one of his 2 week campaign sweeps through the state. I was maybe 10 at the time so I was no help, I was riding along because I liked flying.

I'm sure you remember Dole running for president? Well that was the end of a lifelong friendship with my father. Dole flew into Hays, KS on a chartered 727 to cast his vote. EVERY 727 has rear stairs, they are there to keep from standing the plane on its tail while fueling the wings. However Senator Dole wasn't going to be seen exiting out the bung hole of an airplane so he demanded air stairs. Hays airport doesn't have any so they contacted my father to see if he would bring his up there. Dad agreed to but they have been sitting out in the weather for years and were kind of rusty. We spent the whole day and half the night wire brushing and painting them then loaded them and drove to Hays with no rest. Touched up the paint right there on the ramp at the airport and waited on the grand arrival. So the 727 arrives, all the press is there, Dole comes out of the plane waving with his good hand, gets to the bottom of the stairs then acts like my father has some kind of disease and refuses to acknowledge him. P i ssed the old man right off so dad puts the wheels back down on the stairs and starts pushing it away. A bunch of people stopped him and asked him what he was doing. Dad said "I'm taking my stairs home". They said that Mr Dole will need those to board the plane. Dad replies by pointing at the rear stairs and saying he can climb right straight up in the ### of the plane.

We loaded them back on the trailer, drove back to Garden City, shoved them off the trailer between the 2 shop buildings and they're still sitting there today. It was a VERY quite ride home, dad didn't say more than a couple words but he mumbled quite a bit under his breath with lots of colorful words slipping out.

    That's the stairs I circled.

Dad never owned a Air ride tractor till 2003. He would put air on cab. Air on trailer. Spring drives. He loved the freightliner wide spring drives. Cussed the KW torshion bar. And liked the reliability of Hendrickson, but said his kidneys hated it.

Them old guys are tough and just like you, I learned really quick to just put my head down and go do what needs done. The last thing you wanted was to complain about something and have one of the OG get upset and go do it himself. The price you wind up paying is magnitudes more than if you had just done what needed doing in the first place.
