    Hi all,

I'm a retired school teacher looking for something fun and profitable to do.
I'm considering buying a truck for delivering LTLs. I want an automatic transmission, air-conditioning hydraulic brakes, and no trailer. What would be a wise choice of a truck (something in demand)? Also, I'm old (68) so I don't relish the idea of loading and unloading. I only want to drive within 500-600 miles from home, so I can be home when I want. Any suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Ted Lish

You'll have a hard time getting all you want and having it profitable . It would be hard to get a straight truck without airbrakes although they are out there . If you find one though it won't meet the requirements of any expedite carrier . You might as well get a cargo van . Getting a carrier to sign you on to run the way you want would be difficult . Unless expediters live in Ohio or Michigan they run all over the country and stay out 3 or 4 weeks at a time . You could get your own authority and find your own loads but it would be difficult to make a profit as low as rates are .
If you want to stay under the 26,000 lb. CDL requirement the largest truck you can get is a class 5 (Dodge/Chevy 5500 , Ford F-550 . )

That wouldn't allow loading and unloading at docks . A lift gate and pallet jack would be a good idea also .

Thanks! I am looking at an 18' chevy dry van 5500 with an Izuzu diesel engine.
A local dealer has it. It is a new 2007 model. They want $30,000. I plan to get my own loads through someone like Direct Freight on-line.

Yes, I see that I'll probably have to buy a pallet jack and have a lift gate installed.

    Best,

    Ted

If I was you before buying a truck I would put some calls in to local expedite companies. Ask them what would work for them, having a truck no one wants will only cost dollars. You might want to consider as sprinter. The mpg's is great and you can put a nice bunk in one and still haul two skids.

If it's a 2007 Chevy it has a Duramax engine built by DMAX . Once a joint venture by GM and Isuzu , GM bought out Isuzu's share in 2003 . The engine is built in Moraine , Ohio . The Duramax , Allison Automatic is a good combination . I know several hotshotters running them . It's a good truck . You should try to build up a customer base you can bill directly to avoid paying brokerage fees on all loads .

It really is an Izusu made in Japan for Chevrolet. It's a W5500 series. The engine is a 4HK1-TC Turbo/Intercooled Diesel 5.2L. I bought it today. It's a tilt-cab and feels like you're driving a bus. I agree I'll have to develop a customer base. I have no intention of contracting with an expiditer. I consider myself an owner/operator and will pick up loads when and where I can. It has an 18' dry box, is dock height and can carry a little over 11,000 lbs.
