I got a pre-hire call and letter last week. Was wondering how the miles are going right now. I don't actually go to orientation until 5/18 but would appreciate any advice or input. Should I go with Roehl or look for something better? I spoke with a recruiter at W/S today and she said that they were also still hiring students~ They look to be a solid co. as well but instead of doing a 3 day paid orientation in ATL I would have to go to Montana or NJ for a 10 day with no pay. The advantage there is they put u in a truck with no trainer after that and you are on your own.

I do not see how not having a trainer is an advantage. There are some companies that allow 6mo drivers to train...IMHO...not a good idea either. I had a trainer for a few weeks, I still remember items that he had told me...he was a real trainer, had been driving for many years. At the time I was 50 and he was in his 30's...he showed me more than the school ever did..

You might want to rethink the no trainer benefit....especially if you are fresh out of school....Good Luck!

All the ROEHL drivers must be busy thus no posts. That's a good thing I guess.

That or they can't believe there's yet another thread on it. :p

Your fleet is going to be the biggest factor in how many miles you get. Mind you, they're all slow, but if you're on a hometime fleet and have the skill to haul any trailer they can put behind your tractor, you're going to do better than the national van driver.

From what I understand about the refers, most of our temp-controlled freight is out of Wisconsin (cheese). They'll send you anywhere with it (often out east), and half the time you'll end up hauling dry van freight back, just so you can make them some more money on the cheese.

Last weeks check was around $180.00 take home, and soon you will join us setting and waiting for loads. What do you expect us to say ? Welcome aboard have some of my lunch? There is not much freight as it is and the company still hires new drivers. I should not be directing my frustration at you but you cannot expect me to be happy with more drivers looking for fewer loads.

Hey Cmoore can you tell me what kind of road test they give you at orientation. I'm not relly great at shifting yet as I'm a recent graduate but am improving. I go to orientation in May and was wondering what to expect. Thank you!

I never did a Roehl orientation, as I went through their CDL school, but I can tell you what the road test was like when I finished my 20+ days with a trainer.

We left the Gary yard, crossed the train tracks, made some left hand turns, right hand turns, merged with traffic on the freeway, and made a few turns that might stress someone who's new to driving.

Really, all they're looking to do is make sure you're a safe driver and you're not going to drop the transmission. It's the small things like looking both ways (and rolling down the windows to listen) at RR tracks, even if the lights aren't on, looking in your mirrors, and looking at your turn as you approach it so you know how to setup. There was one turn where you'd either have to wait for another light or go off the road a ways if there was a car waiting at the stop light. No big deal, but I'd recommend waiting.
