I got my CDL in 2007, I'm enough of a veteran to know how to do things like read an atlas and plan a route. I also started on paper logs. I never had a problem with making a plan (including a contingency) and sticking to it. the reasons and excuses I hear downing Elogs usually comes back to "you can't cheat them". I always ran legal, didn't pencil whip my log, only time crunches I got into was when a shipper or receiver held me up or a dispatcher left me sitting. Elog really didn't change much for me. I've never been late because of things I could control.

on paper; you have the same problem and the same rules to follow. Some drivers upset because they think cheating the system should be a right. what good are the rules if nobody follows them.

I've done that more than once, drive a few hours, sit in line watching stupid #### on the internet for 10 hours while sitting in line and then drive 400 miles, and it's completely legal.

On paper you can get yourself out of a bad situation that happened due to circumstances beyond your control, which despite the interminable denials by the ELD fanboys DO in fact actually happen. Now, we have the situations of “I can’t move because I’ll trip the driveline and get a violation.”

That’s just so much better.

Well, the e-logs (blanket term for ELD's and AOBRD's) definitely reduced the number of form and manner violations. Poor bears have to get real creative in finding ways to take care of our $$$afety.

I'd like to 'hear' what those situations are. If you're detained by a shipper or a receiver, you can still make it to the nearest safe parking location under PC. You also have a couple of other tools, such as deferral in Canada and adverse conditions, south of the border.

Bottom line is, that if it's a major disaster situation, your day is ruined anyway. If it's minor, you have tools to make up for it. If you're getting jerked around by shippers/receivers, talk to your dispatcher. If they don't go to bat for you, there are plenty of companies out there that will.
