Just wondering if you guys have a general speed range you use when downshifting from 10 all the way down to 5. This is what I have been using:
9th- 45mph
8th- 35mph
7th- 25mph
6th- 15mph
5th- 10mph
It works fine when I use this formula and the gears shift in great... but my instructor yells and wants me to downshift faster thru the gears. So basically he wants me downshifting at higher speeds for each gear listed above. When I try doing so the gears just grind and he just yells more ha. Just looking to see if someone else does it differently or has a diff formula.
What speed to downshift 10 speed transmission?

play it by ear is all I do. each truck is somewhat different.
to do it at a faster speed, you need to rev it waaay up.MACK E-6 and BigDog Trucker Thank this. -
I’m with @Numb every truck is different. You could have the truck that rolled off the assembly line right behind yours and it’d probably shift a bit different. I just want to say I do find your formula interesting. My buddy’s brother is in truck driving school and he said their instructor told them if they ever get flustered in the high side, a good rule of thumb is to add the digits of your speed together, and the sum is what gear you should be in. And what you said goes along with that.

Tell your instructor to pound sand. Do what works for you

Each Transmission is different. The part about yelling when teaching shows me that's not a teacher. If you understood you wouldn't need a teacher. It also varies when the truck has a load under it. Watch your speed and rpms. If you had a good teacher who would explain how it is done & patient you wouldn't have so much anxiety. Don't be so hard on yourself try to remember it is done. I hope all the best for you. There are plenty people here who will help you. Stay encouraged you will get it. All the best to you .

Yeah I found that formula off another site somewhere ha. It has worked well tho. But coming off the hwy he wants me downshifting quicker. I bump the rpms up and try to shift between 1000-1500 but I just cant get it into gear at higher speeds. @Numb you’re saying to try to slip the gears in at higher rpms?

Yeah it def doesn’t make for a productive learning environment. Nothing I can do ab it but stick it out for another week of training after this week. Taking my cdl test on Monday and then we do doubles all next week.

To be honest with you I don't even do all that down shifting coming to stop signs or certain situations. That's just me. Yes you need to rev it up to float the gears but you have to hit the right gear according to speed.

Your main shift points is two RPM numbers of engine speed....
For example at 1250 you downshift before you start to fight the truck with it bouncing too much and stalling. At 1600 you upshift unless you are already at governor or top speed.Shaner.STL Thanks this. -
I hit the brake, mash the gas and pull it into gear.If you think about too much your bound to miss.
