I had a situation yesterday that helps to illustrate why I can't stand most truck drivers. My load out of Cherokee wasn't going to be ready until this morning, so I took advantage of the situation to bobtail down to the Waffle House in Tuscumbia and have some hash browns. Got to talking to a driver there, a hotshot driver nonetheless, and when I told him who I drove for, his response was "Oh I'm sorry!" WTF? I told him that Millis had been good to me so far and he said that's not what he'd heard from other drivers, blah blah blah. Of course he had to also point out how some of our drivers are idiots and a snide comment about our automatic transmissions. I know it's been going on ever since there') s been such a thing as "starter companies" but it's highly annoying how so-called "seasoned drivers" all want to talk trash about pretty much ALL of the starter companies unless they are working for one. I guess all these seasoned drivers started out with 25 years experience and was born with the keys to a brand new large car (with a 625 hp engine and an 18 speed) in their hands.

I still say that the biggest concern y'all have is the fixed 5th wheels. At least as far as Dan goes. If some ftard backs his tails into a door, that is nobody's fault but the driver. Open your trailer doors before you attempt to dock. Duh. If you are parking at at truck stop, close your tails before backing. Duh. Those are so common sense that they shouldn't even need mentioning. It sucks that you have to worry about those worthless devices, but whatever. The skirts are another Dan concern. I have had damaged skirts on trailers because of some of the places I was sent. It was unavoidable. Like the GP plant in Mogadore. Or some of the stops on the 3 or 4 drop John Deere runs. It's poorly designed or maintained facilities. I've seen other Millis guys do the same. Take that crap off the trailers and those issues disappear. No unnecessary accident reports, no drivers unnecessarily dinged on that BS DAC report. I never got dinged for a skirt, but I know folks that have. I was just smart enough to keep my mouth shut. But someone needs to speak out loud enough about those 5th wheels. I never once saw an accident report that didn't mention at least one bent cab extender. Yeah, man, the turning radius of those trucks are a fn joke. So DUH, those things are gonna get bent. Drivers shouldn't get punished for poor truck specs. Whoever specs the Millis trucks don't drive, I promise you that.

So, lemme get this straight.... You got looked down upon by a HOTSHOT DRIVER?!?!? If that dude had any idea how much we all make fun of those guys on the O/O side, he might've kept his mouth shut. Those guys are just wannabe big boy truckers, they just never grew up. None of us respect them.

I was thinking the same thing. He says he drove a tractor for a number of years. But something I've noticed is that you rarely ever talk to a driver that only has a year or two experience. Every driver out here has been out here for 40 years to hear them tell it.
Except me. I'll always have just gotten my CDL yesterday.Steelersjunkie Thanks this. -
I don't even understand the appeal of hotshots nowadays. For the price of a decent new 1 ton or bigger diesel pickup truck, you can go get yourself a gently used tractor that'll give you more miles and most likely need less maintenance....and you'll likely have more freight available, not to mention having an actual bed to sleep in instead of something makeshift in the back seat.

First off, I'm gonna straight up call that guy a liar. Noone in their right mind would go from driving a real truck to driving a pickup and pretend to be a real trucker. I'm calling complete BS on that. Second, they can't hual squat for cargo. There is definitely a niche for what they do, I'll grant them that. Expedited freight services serve a much needed purpose. But make no mistake, those aren't truckers. Third, there are some badazz trucks specifically buit to do what they do, and they have a bunk. But that brings me back to your point. For the cost of that vehicle, I can get a killer truck for the same price that can make me some real money. And I won't have to feel like I'm wearing daddy's old suit to go to the prom. Every time I see one of those trucks taking up a semi spot at a rest area or a truck stop, it pisses me off. Hell, I'd rather see a camper in a truck spot than a hotshot.Last edited: Jan 26, 2019

Yeah if I were going to do anything like that, I'd get me one of those expediter straight trucks. Only problem is that there's a lack of freight that can be completed on time for a solo driver....and I did team stuff very briefly back in the 90s and I don't really ever want to sleep in a moving truck again.

I'm in complete agreement on both the truck and the need for team drivers. I have to imagine that the specialty expedited trucks would be a more comfortable place to sleep while moving. But the only person I could imagine teaming with is my wife. And even then, I'm sure one of us would end up killing the other one. Too much time and too little space. That's a recipe for murder. The fact that I completed training at Millis without going to prison is a miracle.

He is just compensating for his feeling of inadequacy in his personal life.Steelersjunkie Thanks this.
