Does the mic gain function work? It operates the same way.

Yes it works. Spoke to Uniden tech support. He had a radio right there in front of him
He says that there isnt a way to adjust the RF gain for the regular side of the radio, only the local side. Radio wasn't designed for end user to adjust standard rf gain. If anyone can show me different, please make a video of it so that I can see.Slowmover1 and Tb0n3 Thank this. -
Uniden must of changed the radio, my 980 is at least 4 to 5 years old( Im guessing) and I am able to adjust the rf gain level with no problem, I would regularly keep it between level 3 and 5. It was always my understanding that local was not a sperate mode, it was simply a noise filter similar to high cut on other Uniden radios, seems to me if rf gain can be adjusted with word " local" showing that once local is turned off the rf gain level should remain the same.Slowmover1 Thanks this.

Then Uniden needs to edit the owners manual and make it accuarate. Have you tried just keeping it on local setting? It should only filter out static, shouldnt reduce rf gain , since you are able to adjust level with local turned on. My ideal setting was rf gain level 3 with local turned on.Slowmover1 Thanks this.

Did you ask the genius Uniden tech then " why bother putting a rf gain button if it cannot be adjusted ? ", I dont think he knows what he is talking about, probably an intern.Slowmover1 Thanks this.

I have two to eval for my fleet, they are a long long way to being useful. I spent 30 minutes on the phone with uniden, the guy who has been doing my installs on new trucks spent 110 minutes on the phone wasting his time trying to get them to work so now they are sitting on the shelf.
See they could redo the firmware to fix these problems but if you read the instruction manual carefully, they seem to ignore the typos and incorrect information so I don't expect them to fix the radio any time soon.Slowmover1 and wolverine11 Thank this. -
I have a 980 and 880 and havnt had any issues with either one, a friend is currently using 980 on his base and loves it and I will hookup the 880 occasionally in the big truck and use it ( Im always switching radios, Mckinley in line now) . Uniden needs to stop being so secretive with these radios and release service manuals and schematics ,if they havnt already, I mean really, they are good radios but nothing super special.
Slowmover1 and Tb0n3 Thank this. -
The standard RF gain should be wide open, which is why you can only adjust it on local.
Slowmover1 Thanks this. -
Too much static with all the electronic crap in these new trucks, thats why I set mine on level 3 most of the time. The new Mckinley I have brings in alot of static and I dont run rf gain wide open on it either, the only radio I can run rf gain at max is a Cobra 29 ( LX or LTD) , maybe the filtering is better , not sure.
