As a brand new driver with an A license and all his endorsements, I got on with ltl work right away. Did that for 8 months, got tired of the schedule then went and did B class work delivering alcohol. Then I got offered a job with a construction company driving dump trucks and learning how to haul equipment. So thats what I do now.
So no, you dont have to go OTR right out of school.
Do all new drivers go OTR?

I once was under the same assumption as you. I got my CDL and went OTR for a year thinking that was the only way to be hired as a local driver... I was wrong.
I believe it was easier for me to hire on local with the accident free miles from my OTR experience, but not necessary. There are are several drivers at my company that never did OTR.
I am glad I did a year OTR, just to get a feel for the experience, but I would have been fine without it...
Good luck!bentstrider83 Thanks this. -

Up until a few weeks ago I had never driven a sleeper truck. The company I am with now has fleet of W900's with sleepers. I still don't sleep in the truck though and I wont. Back to the yard every day.

You drive a sleeper cab for day work?

Same here, I had been running a dump trailer for a couple of years and decided to do something different.I answered an ad for a regional flatbedder and my first load out the gate was a load of used steel that had to be moved immediately. It turned out to be 67klbs and 60' long.I'd never even seen a stretch trailer, let alone pull one,and the horse was a 74' KW K100 with a single sleeper and spoke wheels, even the steer axle had spokes. That load was local in Jersey. My second load was a set of crane leads going to Millenocket Me in the same truck.I'd never even been out of Jersey with a big truck. After that I was hooked, the road was for me.Yeah I went to school, The School of Hard Knocks, and I've enjoyed most of it.Chinatown Thanks this.

Yep, pulling an oil barrel. No logs either since I stay within 100 miles of the yard. My average length of haul is less than 40 miles. Usually 4 loads a day.BigDog Trucker and Tombstone69 Thank this.
