The other thing I was telling him and now my nieces fiancé is applying is they have an advantage over us in a way. The baby boomers are retiring rapidly and a young guy with ambition will be set. My buddy and I applied at that same co-op in 95/96 and there was no openings. If I had got on it would have been years before we moved up. It’s that way in construction to, we’re short handed.Al. My high school guidance councilor stood there and would tell a class that if you didnt get a 4 year college degree you would not make anything of yourself and the kids going to Vocational school half the day were wasting time. Now in a class of 300 there are a couple Dr's and a few lawyers. But the group of guys I am still friends with will fill a few tables that own their own Contruction, trucking, machine shop, HVAC, and on companies. Not one 4 year degree in the crowed. So I brought this up with the current school board president that I personally know today. They just started a program encouraging the Votech school and that some kids dont need to go to college. Strange stuff there!
At 21 I had my own house. (I didn't own it) New pickup in driveway and was one overtime working SOB. But on my days off was one partying SOB.Al. Roper, catalinaflyer, 1951 ford and 18 others Thank this. -
I have worked since bout 10. Dad was a hard man, harder on his kids. And I thank him for it. A relative stated once bout my profession being embarrassing. When I got done with her she was in tears and I got aplause from the other family members sitting there. To this day she barely gets by money wise. And I have helped out never with conditions of any kind.

Back in the day before load boards and brokers. I use to find a payphone and phone book and call all the trucking companies in the area for freight when I drove one of the old man's trucks. Tripped leased the crap out of it all. Then end of week go around and collect each trip lease check.

I've been preaching the same sermon my whole life. Opportunity varies from cycle to cycle for the different generations. This is only common sense but the vast majority will argue their heads off denying it.
Many of us here have said or thought that we were born too late and that we could have excelled ( even more, in some cases ) in an earlier era.catalinaflyer, 1951 ford, Crusader66 and 15 others Thank this.
