Here is my take on the 4 yr college experience.
We have lost track of the purpose of college, it is not to train you to get a specific job. It is to teach one how to critically think and communicate in a coherent manner. The things you are learning as an undergraduate are related to problem solving - research and analysis, breath of knowledge, writing and even speaking. The idea being if one developed these tools they will be better to positioned to work/lead in a variety of work settings (not job specific or industry specific). Even science and technologies degrees only lay the basic foundation of problem solving tools so that when the opportunity to gain experience is presented the graduate can at least have the basic skills.
A college degree has only turned into a disqualifier in the job search. If you don’t have one, it is an easy way for a hiring manager to thin the field. An example - my Ex-wife was a highly skilled nurse with nearly 20 years experience - the healthcare system forced her into completing a 4 year degree to maintain her position as she could not change roles or employers without it. It was the “new” minimum requirement.
One should not go to college to get a job, it doesn’t really work except for a very small percentage of fields and candidates.
To be honest the college experience is much beneficial to people who have entered the workplace and need to develope the tools to advance in their already chosen profession.
I worked through my entire high school and college years and don’t regret it at all.
I have worked in several different industries and my degree has helped me to some degree in all of them but it didn’t get me a job or teach me how to do it once I got it.

Appliance white paint before all the aluminum budds. Think dad had a buddy at whirlpool. He had a set of steel doubles earlier all on daytons. And would use a ruler to make sure they were on straight!. Lots of painting. 11.00 24 bias plys made a man out of many boys. I’m very opinionated on school. I made it all the way through the 9th grade. Ive made more money than anyone in my family. They have all at one point or another called me a workaholic. Over the course of 20 years I reached the position of “President of Operations” and had over 300 employees at one point. I have been married one time at 23 years so far. Everyone else has been married at least 2 times and none are currently married. I raised a step son and provided for my family since I was 23 years old.
Every one of my parents (I had 4) and all my siblings (4 older than I) told me I would never amount to spit.
I moved out of the house at 15 years old and vowed to never ask any of them for anything. And I never did. They all made fun of me when I told them I was going to drive a truck at 45 years old.
Same old ####!
I absolutely hate the current condition of education. It’s an absolute joke and has been since I was in school in the 80’s.
I do not regret my path one bit. -

I totally agree. I had a friend in high school went to work part time at a lumberyard. They started him in the back office - helping with their inventory. He learned the lumber market through them, and by the time he was 16 he was buying and selling lumber futures for the chain of lumber yards. He made 6 figures in high school and went on to be the most financially successful person I know. He never even applied to go to college....Al.
