i have got a truck that is a 5 speed which each gear can be split in to high and low. I keep getting conflicting answers on what type of gear box it is (non-synchro, synchro etc). My partner went for his licence yesterday and he explained what type of gear box it is and they told him to go in an automatic truck which will cover in straight manual with a splitter.

Years ago i worked for a company that had this kind of gear box if i think its what your describing you have to split every gear it used to create havoc for the temps who'd come in to do change over work they couldn't get the truck out of the yard.I knew how to use it as i regularly drove trucks with the same gear box. If it is this type of road ranger gear box you'll still need to double clutch you will soon find out if it is cause if its a ranger box it'll start to crunch if you only push the clutch in once like for a synchro, so all you've got to do is split every gear its great practice for if you ever have to drive an 18 speed.

Sounds like a two speed rear axle maybe? Is it an old single axle? I drove an old IH roll off with 5 speed spicer synchronized transmission with two speed axle. I only ever split 5th in it.

I think the axle splitter was a round red plastic up/down push pull switch on side of shifter. It had an 8 ball shifter knob lol
