This only applies to stops that are not part of the 10-hour rest (including split-sleeper portions of two and eight hours), or the 34-hour reset, or longer durations of off-duty time. As the 10-hour rest period (and all of its incarnations) is mandated, you do not need authorization from the carrier. The same applies to the 34-hour reset.

How long have we been using these hours of service regs? Since 2005 they have stayed the same, and you still can't get two drivers to agree on something. I feel like a broken record telling drivers everyday that they are in violation. "Well...golly..gee I don't know. This is the way I've always done it." Please you have Logs R Us on here, use her. She is always willing to help you with log questions. Please, I feel like it's "Groundhog Day." I'm tired of telling driver's everyday, all day that there log is screwed up.

No; they have changed twice since then.... I get tired of telling these diesel bears that all day long.....
Makes us even because you can't get two diesel bears to agree on anything either! LOL!

Hell I had a cop the other day overhear me talking to another driver about the split sleeper birth option on logging. He tried to tell me then and there it was illegal to split your time because even if you rest 8 hours your clock doesn't stop. Now from my reading if I take an 8 hour break after 6 hours on duty I have 8 hours remaining on duty when I get up from a FULL 8 hours. However, if I only take 2-7 hours then my 14 hour clock does continue running. Have I got this correct?

Yes, so long as you take your eight in the sleeper.

But like you say , if you take 8 after 6 you only have 8 left . Why not take 10 and have 14 ?

Sometimes splitting your log will allow you to pick up a load you wouldn't otherwise be able to get. This happened to me just the other day... taking only eight hours, instead of a full ten, allowed me to make the pickup time. Otherwise, I'd have been stuck for a day waiting on something else.

Yeah , I've taken 8 to be able to make a delivery on time but all our drivers say whenever they split sleeper , no matter how they do it safety charges them with a violation . They audit logs with a computer . I guess the computer can't compensate for splitting the sleeper . Nobody's ever been penalized for it and they still give me a shirt every quarter .

I use DDL for logging, so I know my logs are never in violation. Sounds like their software needs to be updated. Who do you drive for?
