Yea it use to be that two sticks was the only way to get those types of gears but now with the technology drivers can get the low gear ratios with highway gears in the same gear box. The newer trans also allows for smoother shifts with the way the gears mesh. I am not a trans expert like some of the guys on here but I've driven and worked on tractors long enough to recognize some of the better improvements over the years. As well as the bad ones...

Ok Newbie here just saying.
Heres what i have
DDECIII Series 60 Detroit
ECM says 600hp tune.. yeah right!
RTLO16718A 13 speed
3.70 with 24.5 tall rubber @ 1600 rpm 66 mph.
Ive gad overhead and rods and mains installed. Most all sensors replaced.
Had some broke or worn wires repaired.
I just wished it pulled better. Any advice is appreciated -
A RTLO 16718A is not a 13 speed trans. Number is more likely 16713A
If your having trouble pulling with 3.70 rears at 1600 Rpm then your having engine issues. Lack of power because 1600rpm with 3.70’s is your sweet spot. That particular setup is made for pulling, not top speed. Personally, I’ve never been a fan of 3.70’s. I really doubt your getting 600hp, probably closer to 400hp. And even at 400hp that setup should pull fantastic. -
.73 final on tall rubber...... something else is going on as well. Those numbers don’t add up correctly.
RTLO has a .73 final OD on 13A series or 18B series Either @RedneckCyclist is a split low, or has the wrong tag on his trans. Something to look at either way.
Oxbow and spsauerland Thank this. -
.....idk every trans part number... what if it IS a rtlo16718a (stated; and I assumed it was incorrect... maybe it’s a 18 taken for a 13....) that would explain a .86 (.87? It’s been a while) final overdrive, and match the approximate speed.
-
Yeah. Something not adding up with top speed for the part number you posted up. But even if final ratio is a .86 at 66mph 1600Rpm you should just be scooting down the road. Hill or no hill, loaded or empty that drive setup should tug along just fine. I could see if your not happy with top speed, but pulling power should not be a issue.

Well that could be, lack of power could be a lot of things tho, as you know @Largecar359. Air piping, bad ecm tune, ####ed up injector, contaminated fuel, junk filters, list goes on. Can’t really nail anything down without some more info from the fella tho.Oxbow and spsauerland Thank this. -
Very true, this dude sparks a convo from back in 2011 and then bolts. Just us going back n’ forth like internet mechanics. Wonder how many start up O/O’s from 2011 are still spinning wheels. They usually pound this forum hard when they start up then you never hear from them again. Would be nice if they could post some updates on how they went down in flames so the next guy could learn from them, as well as us. Tough enough out here. Not Easy at all.
Oxbow, spsauerland, SL3406 and 1 other person Thank this.
