Warranty only pays about 3.3 hours for us to do a high temp cooler core. Crazy eh?

What??? I've been quoted 5 hours (at $145/hr) for overhead adjustment.
3.3 hours for cooler core replacement is a rip off for you guys of course, on the other hand that would be a steal deal for me only if dealers would charge actual 3.3 hours for that job. My shop (not a dealer) quoted me 6-7 hours ($75/hr) for egr valve replacement and they complained about complexity of the job. I don't want to know what the bill would be for doing cooler core, that is why I'm wrenching myself as much as possible. Another thing is that no one wants to work on these engines. The shop I went to last time just to do basic maintenance work done like oil change, fuel filters etc, said don't come to us for any service on this engine, we don't want it. I lol'd and thought to myself "silly clowns"

Yep, the "standard" repair times are a complete joke as much as the whole engine is. I work at a dealer in Ontario, Canada. Several times we had customers of ours break down in the US and actually paid out of pocket to get towed all the way back home because many US dealers would simply refuse to do warranty work on Maxxforce engines unless it was one of their own customers. They would just say there is 3-4 week waiting period and since no one would want to wait, they just towed their stuff back. Many dealers out there lost their shirts because out of an 8 hour shift working on a warranty job, we would get paid back roughly 2-3 hours of actual pay! So you really can't blame them for refusing. For any shop that is flat rate, it was a very dark time!

I'm thankful for HeavyD. The shops around me know nothing about maxxforce 13, they don't want them in their shops. So, this forum and YouTube has been my resource.

I just went through this with my 2012. After spending thousands and thousands at the dealership trying to get it fixed, I finally had to pull it off the road and replace the truck. New high-temp EGR cooler, new DPF filter (corrosion damage from long-term coolant consumption), and new DPF sensors. Ran great for a month. Crankcase filter/spinner plugged. Replaced it and it ran great for a month. CEL and loss of power on cold start up. New low-temp EGR cooler. No change. New turbo actuator. No change. Turbo actuator replaced a 2nd time assuming first part defective. No change. $4000 in repairs and 2 weeks of downtime and the truck was worse than when it went to the dealership. Dealer recommended EGR valve replacement with no guarantee it would fix it. Truck parked and removed from service. Upon inspection after replacing the truck, I found out that the dealership failed to secure the wiring for the air control valve while completing previous repairs and it had rubbed against the EGR tube causing a short. Two wraps of electrical tape and a couple of zip ties and power is restored and the truck is working properly again. Start simple and find a competent mechanic with integrity.

We ran into a SIMILAR issue. New EGR coolers and housing, month later high pressure turbo went out, stupid mechanic forgot to tighten the clamp on the turbo and it blew out oil and had no power. spend another $1200 getting it fixed right and a threat of chargeback on the company card for failing to repair my truck properly has changed the mechanics attitude.

So in 2 weeks and almost $14K we have replaced the High pressure turbo, the DPF filter and all 3 O2 sensors, the wastegate, the CCOS (maintenance since we were that deep into the truck) and the alternator decided to go bad as well. I'm hoping that we have the big parts fixed and we can actually start to run and produce money. When the truck runs, she makes 8-9K gross a week.

@Heavyd Would a bad low pressure turbo (it sticks) cause a low boost issue? It seems we've now got a bad one. The mechanic tried turning it and its binding and not free spinning.
