There is a GMC Pickup being ready for retail sale very soon capable of loading to 31600 pounds gross with or without trailer.
If it is all your private stuff you own outright,it's not a commercial vehicle. Sort of like a tool truck hauling all the bric abrack to the jobsite. You can and did put people into it with a basic car license. Even though you paid them by the hour they had a sufficient license to tool around in that tool truck following the rest of us to the new driveway job waiting to be finished. That is how we did sometimes with our tool truck which had everything down to the last bolt.

And the ever increasing tightening of regulating the acquiring of a CDL B or A among the endorsements being tightened up as well and so on so forth etc.. is a increase of revenue to dear Uncle Sam among other hands being held out palm up patiently waiting for you to chop a check.
They already started getting off their duffs and moving towards regulation of the small van stuff that is apparently attracting their attention. People in the million have decided to make a dollar doing this and now they face fees, regulations, rules, laws and so on with the little vans. -

You could register a Toyota Prius for 80,000 lbs but it wouldnt make it require a CDL. The registered weight is a state tax issue. The more the weight the more you pay.
DOT looks at the regulations with state GVW, GVWR, or GCWR whichever is higher. It does not look at how it is registered. Stay under 26,001 on those and no CDL required. -
