If I had flatbed doubles (28 ft), is overhang allowed i.e. over the deck of the front trailer, and over the rear of the 2nd trailer? Does that basicly fall under the max 65' rule? I was curious if the 65' applied only to the decks + tongue, or included cargo?

    cke Thanks this.

A-doubles or B-doubles? Because you can overhang B-doubles to your heart's content so long as the total vehicle length doesn't exceed 90 ft in Canada and 95 ft in North Dakota (the one state I know).

SAR, MartinFromBC and cke Thank this.

Where do you run? All answers depend on that.
The overall length laws in each state differ and that will be the main factor in most. There will be some that regulate "box length"as well and allow for more spread between to allow for more weight on each axle instead of grouping the center as a tandem group while giving you more overall length.

I tend to run AZ, NV, CO, NM. I haul cargo trailers and cars to return. Weight wont be an issue. Shooting for the extra 5 feet of deck and better turning radius. Might even save a little weight. Will be using electric axles

These guides usually aren't hard to find...

Arizona: Rules and Regulations (opens .pdf)

    53' semi-trailer, 28'6" full trailer, 65' full combination, 3' front overhang, 6' rear overhang

    Nevada: Trucker Guide (opens .pdf)

"Cargo body length for a tractor followed by 2 or 3 cargo units cannot exceed 95 ft. Cargo body length for a truck followed by 1 or 2 cargo units cannot exceed 98 ft."

    Colorado: Trucker Guide (opens. pdf)

" LVCs must obtain a special permit and may only travel on designated routes. LVCs, except the "Truck with Trailer" combination, have no overall length limitation."

New Mexico: Big Truck Guide (opens .pdf)

Doubles shown in diagram, must be 28'6" trailers or less, front overhang cannot exceed 3' and rear overhang cannot exceed 7'. There does not seem to be any specific restriction on total vehicle length for doubles (aside from trailers) and a single semi-trailer unit cannot exceed 65' total length.

I have a similar question- trying to ship a 45HC on a tilt-back 40 deck and wondering how much trouble I will have getting permission for it. 4' overhang off the back, and 1' off the front? Is there a front? Modified container, not empty.
