Thank you all for the replies. To Chinatown, Southwest is who I’ve had conversations with a few weeks back. They seem well reviewed.

To x1Heavy, thankfully my back is fine, so maybe getting into trucking at this age my back will last. I only need to do this for another 12-13 years and I’m done. Appreciate your reply.

Thank you Ridgeline for the advice. Your info is along the lines of what I’ve read in posts. 28 years is a long time ago, most people probably don’t care. Sh/t happens and we grow up and learn.

Locate and research the trucking company with work schedule & pay/benefits that suit you THEN decide about the CDL. In the old days you had to do OTR for a year or two before any local job was available. Not any more. You can start as a local driver. The goal is to find a "forever home", not get the CDL and put in time at a crap company before getting the gig you want.

So,you were a kid and trying to buy booze.Well,I guess you were 21 or 22 when it all went down? Shouldnt be a big deal...unless youre aiming for some high end loads ...they may frown on the theft..not Sure...but,Normal trucking should not be a problem, especially with the perfect driving record and all.Good luck to ya.

I am speaking as a felon that you will have no challenge at all. My felony is 1998 and I have worked some good jobs and have a good job now. You just need to get that magic one year of experience before you can have the freedom to move around from job to job. I worked ten years as a tractor dumptrailer operator in the demolition industry and was able to go home everyday. I prefer to drive otr and go home on the weekends now.

A felony is a problem in only 2 basic ways. A felony record depending on things like time and type can prevent you from entering Canada. If a carrier does extensive business there you will have a difficult time getting on. Another problem with "some" type felonies a driver can get into is working for a carrier where a driver will need hazmat/TWIC. There is some class of felonies that are lifetime bars to get these. Then there are some felonies that take a few years to clear off. I bring this up because a person I know told me he had to fire a driver because his TSA background check came back declined. Upon further investigation, this person had transmitted a terroristic threat under Georgia law. He can never get a hazmat or a TWIC card ever. About 3 years ago I was involved in a situation where another driver got his background check declined because of something really stupid he did years before. He was part of a threat to bomb a Federal Courthouse. Another issue that can cause a problem with felonies is customers that do not want drivers that have been convicted of some crimes on their property. I know about 10 of these businesses. I also understand why they do this. One such business makes ammo.

However, there are thousands of felons driving in general OTR jobs. Don't let a felony be a block. Just do your homework, because some carriers will place that have you ever been convicted of a felony box right on their applications and they mean it.

Most only go back 10 years. I would also try to get a hazmat which proves you passed a TSA background check. You may not go into Canada but you can get on very secure property.
