Russian women were deadly snipers during WWII.
"Lyudmila Mikhailovna Pavlichenko was a Soviet sniper in the Red Army during World War II, credited with 309 kills. She is regarded as one of the top military snipers of all time and the most successful female sniper in history."

That would put Simo Hayha's record to shame. I wonder how many of these are confirmed kills.

"Although she was given the option of serving as a nurse, she requested to be assigned in the infantry and accordingly she was delegated to the 25th Rifle Division of the Red Army. With this she emerged among the 2000 female snipers who fought in the Second World War and remained one of the 500 snipers who survived the war."

Not really. Simo wasnt a sniper the way we usually think of them. Starting with equipment. He didnt use a scope and his kills were generally well within normally combat range. Think of him as a snow ninja.

I could see snow ninja when talking about his subgun kills, but when i read the stories about the rifle kills i imagine a farm boy hunting game and that fits in with the sniper role for me (sniping). Not necessarily wearing a pee-soaked ghillie suit sitting motionless for days at a time. My understanding is that he purposely didn't use optics because he had learned to use use the Russians' glare to place shots.

You pretty much got it. He also didnt like optics because he felt they forced him to expose more of his head to use them.
