    Gentlemen,

In case you are not aware billing stupidity, usually due to being outsourced to the curry festival in Bangalore, affects more than just the city drivers. Linehaul guys have to be mindful of it too. Here’s why.

I had a delivery earlier today billed at 10 pcs at 10000 lbs. It was 10 tiny pieces of aluminum in a cardboard tube.

“But Mr. Mack, why do linehaul guys have to give a crap about this?”

Because this would mean a pup that should’ve been a tail may very well have ended up being a lead, and 10 grand is a hell of a lot more than enough to make that difference.

This is why I tell people that if you have access to a scale at your terminal, scale those pups EVERY TIME.

For those of us that don’t haul pups... I assume that you always want to have the heavier of the two pups in the front?

Will they begin to “whip” like a non-CMV Trailer with more weight on the tail than the tongue?

Thanks for the education in advance!!!

That’s correct, and heaviest to lightest front to back with triples.

The issue is what some call the “crack the whip” effect, where steering movements are basically magnified through the rig.

Sometimes you’ll see a set going down the road doing this, and it’s often because they’re either backwards for reasons like I outlined above, or to borrow a phrase from @TripleSix and @Lepton1, the driver is new to this and he’s using “yankee doodle steering”.

In my experience with doubles and triples it takes a big weight difference between the two trailers for them to misbehave, like Mack pointed out it's triples that you will really notice the difference, a grand difference between the trailers won't cause much disturbance but anything beyond that you will have a miserable trip, and sometimes you just have a bad set, they just won't settle down for nothing even if you did hook all three in proper weight order, the main thing with doubles is the scale houses and inclement weather, I was always told most scales will let you slide with maybe a 1000 to 1500 lbs difference between the two as far as the back one being heavier, anything beyond that they will probably tell you that you need to swap it around, but the weather is the biggest factor, if you are running with a set where the the rear box is considerably heavier than the front and you are going over snow covered hills even with chains on, then you may have problems, because basically you have robbed your power unit of extra weight it could have had on it for more traction going up hill, and you have increased the chances of the heavier rear box wanting to come around on you going down the hill whether you brake or not.

Basically, that’s just constantly over correcting and compensating for your steering to the point where you’re all over the road.

Is this why I always see the real trailer laying
On the side and the truck and first trailer
    Still standing upright.

I see that a lot going across Wyoming.

    USMC 3531 Thanks this.
