Anyone have an idea what the cost and time is to convert rack and pinion to the old style gear box? Just bought truck 3 weeks ago, havent even tagged it yet and the rack is bad. Freightliner no longer sells a replacement and only option appears to be converting it.

First generation Cascadias had rack and pinion steering. Was a good idea, but wasn’t heavy duty enough to stand up to the rigours of Trucking.
I believe the whole front axle has to be changed out.
Could get it used at a wrecking yard .rabbiporkchop Thanks this. -
Never knew they came with rack and pinion until now. This guy did his. Found a donor truck.

At that point I would sell the truck and buy something else.

It's a 2009 Cascadia. I didnt know they ever came with it, had multiple others confused as well. Now I know why after researching. Replacement rack is $5,000 but no longer available. Freightliner gave me a list of needed parts that comes out to $4,500 so I'm leaning toward a salvage yard. Can find them for under $2,000 for a front cut off but shipping might not make it worth it for me if I cant find one local
