I've never delivered in Montana, or loaded for that matter. I run the same route all the time now, but when I ran otr if there was a large enough discrepancy my dispatcher would take care of it.

Also, if I was forced to route strangely due to weather, road closures, etc...he would add a city I traveled through to the routing to recalculate it.

Also in the couple of cases I've had really short loads (say same zip code p/u delivery or even 100 mile loads or some nonsense) the company would just pay a flat rate instead of cpm.

If they give you more for one thing it won't be there for something else...

Haha! You’re right man, that’s my fault. 1,000 apologies. 4* zip codes.

Runs like these, which aren't that uncommon, serve as proof that such companies are not even paying zip code to zip code, as they claim to be. Zip codes aren't 60 miles wide. Area code to area code maybe.

Years ago Nappi trucking, leased to Chem Leaman paid hub miles to union drivers; based on the average of (3) trip's hub miles to set a standard. Their Macks were tag axles. One morning they caught one of the 'hub' trucks they used to make the standard sitting in the Peter Pank dinner with the tag's air bags filled to the max and the truck sitting there in gear spinning the hub while the driver ate breakfast...

The fleet owner where I worked used the practical miles to his advantage posting a list of what miles CLTL was paying him and they logged those miles saving a few layovers each week and the Safety Man never caught on....

Personally I think it’s all about time. If I am going to get routed through some podunk town doing 35mph, when I can go an additional 25 miles off route to get on an interstate then that’s what I’m going to do. It’s faster and safer. But, Dispatcher’s don’t see that with their tunnel vision

Google is absolutely not practical anything sir. You could not be anymore wrong on that statement. Google will put you on dirt roads to avoid a 10 min back up to save 6 minutes.
If you trust Google to route you truck routes I promise you it will get you in a pickle big time.
I use Google a lot , Google will route you 30 miles extra on a 2hr trip because it calculates you can do it in 1:50 mins going 30 miles more.
It loves toll roads if you do not avoid tolls in settings. It'll put ya on a ferry if ya don't avoid ferry in settings.
