IIRC, my last paper copy (Texas) had a short valid period. Much shorter than 90 days. Maybe 45 days but I think it was something odd like 25 days. And for me that’s a real inconvenience real close to the first real inconvenience.

Me too. I thought maybe Swift had gotten a contract to move nuclear warheads for the DOD and the driver was trying to get on that fleet.

Man, they would hate me. Nobody gets to see or scan my license unless they are wearing a badge and a gun issued by the state or federal government.

Why do companies (shippers/recievers) need to see your cdl other than to sell your personal information to a 3rd party.

They're from the govt and they aim to please, and to leave early on Fridays, and do nothing until after their 2nd coffee break on Mon before going to lunch.

REAL ID driver license. I thonk something like 8 of the 57 states*, already have REAL ID compliant DLs. The other states had until some deadline to become compliant or their state DL would not be adequate for certain purposes, like boarding domestic airline flights.

    * If you think there are less than 57 states you are a "racist" according to the self-appointed atheist moral judges.

For food grade they have to verify everyone who has "access" to the load, part of the food safety modernization act of 2004.

For the rest its liability shielding. More and more shippers and brokers are being held liable for the carrier's actions. Plus they want to be able to identify which driver hit/stole whatever from the video. If they know truck 12500 was being driven by Joe Shifty, it makes it a whole lot easier to track down a stolen load.

    tscottme and STexan Thank this.

And not just verify identity at entry, but to have access to and made available for any who may be investigating some sort of incident later on. Some carriers can be trusted to make this available later on, and some can not. So now we have this [at food processing facilities but note some still do not perform this security aspect to the extent they are supposed to]

I've always just provided company issued ID. If that's not good enough too bad!

How comfortable do you think they would be giving you a photocopy of their license?

If the person is cute who is making the photocopy, I write my phone number and a smiley face on the copy so she’ll be sure to call me later on when she gets off work. I know she’ll call so I just call dispatch and tell them I’m going to be a day late, then wait on her call.
