Wow! I read every comment! My parents were middle class. I did chores for a small allowance as a kid. Some kid in the neighborhood dared me to break his own parents window. I did. Dad made me pay for it out of my allowance (TRUE- not Brady Bunch episode)! One thing that was drilled into me as a child was honesty! Even the subtle manipulations I tried on them never flew. Dad made me look up the word devious in the dictionary among other things. That stuck. They divorced when I was 14, mom started drinking and the nightmare began(but that's another novel)! I do know several people in their 50's that still are bumming cigarette money, rent, utilities, whatever, regularly, and have all their lives. Two have a dad 85 years old living off social security and VA benefits. I have never once heard them ask their disabled dad "How are you? Do you need anything? " I despise this! Clearly everyone has their own way of trying to make adults out of our children. My own daughter works 50 hours a week at Steak and Shake to raise my own two little grandbabies. Her husband works at Steak and Shake too. I ache for them cause it's rough. She only asked for a little money from me once, I had it- she got it! Thanks everyone!

What are your father’s plan for succession? I assume he owns a company of some sort. What are his plans for when he is too old to do it anymore? Seems like with you being his only son he would have been teaching you the ropes. Not giving you handouts but having you start from the bottom up.
I wouldn’t consider myself rich but I own a company in the oil industry and have for about 12 years. My son started working with us during the summers when he was 13. He can choose whatever path he wants in life but I am going to do my best to teach him about what I do so that if he chooses he can take over some day.Tb0n3 Thanks this. -
