I know there is some good paying reefer freight, but a lot is cheap. With the cost of trailer, added cost of operation, insurance, liability, and excessive wait time, lumpers. Who in there right mind wants to haul it.
SAR, cke, 4mer trucker and 10 others Thank this. -
Dam I had an old breaker bar just like that... ya find that layin on 12 somewhere?
SAR, cke, MagnumaMoose and 13 others Thank this. -
Let’s see if I can explain this. When you load a reefer you have to pre cool the trailer before they will load you. Now, with produce and meat and dairy you never really know when that will be. Could easily be 24 to 48 hours. Fresh chicken is run at 28 degrees, frozen at -10 and ice cream at -20. A reefer is more of a maintainer of temperature that it is a refrigerator. So pre cooling is hard on the unit.
All that said, you are I. Laurel, MS in mid July it’s 98 with 80% humidity. You are also in a dirt lot with the sun beating on the top of that trailer. That unit is running wide open and it will until the sun goes down. You may be there 24 hours, you can’t leave and you can’t shut it off. If you’re not ready when they are you’re s.o.l.
Same goes on with the delivery end. You don’t want to run out. Or you now own 42,000 pounds of catfish bait.
Also it make more sense in some cases to carry as much fuel from a cheaper state. That way you don’t have to buy from a higher priced state.
In the summer it’s not uncommon to burn 50 to 75 gals a day. -
They accomplished the main goal though .... piss away lots of $$$$peterbilt_2005, SAR, 7-UP and 16 others Thank this.
