Hey all, newbie here! I'm going to go look at a 2001 Volvo 670 w/D12 and manual 10 spd. The add says it has 665k miles on it and the trans and clutch are new. I'm looking at an older truck because pre EGR/DEF and it's my first truck. Plus, I plan on working on it myself and heard the older pre egr/def trucks are easier. When I go look at it, what should I look for? Any signs of something to stay away from? Thanks for any info.. Alex!!

I own an 05 670. I've got a d12d 13 manual spd. trans. 1.4 million truck drives good easy to work on and you can dump money easy into trucks. I would say I'm around the 30k Mark. Has the Hendrickson airride front axle. Kingpins are part of the axle had to replace axle. The list is long in short make sure you check brakes ,springs, tires, 5th wheel , frame especially in Salt areas. Rust and cracks happen. Wheel seals wheel bearings. Diff fluids. Driveshaft. Exhaust system. Air leaks. The more you check the better. It might be annoying ..but you will pay later if you overlook something major later

Inspect the engine as much as you can
Look for too much blow by
Excessive exhaust smoke white/gray/black never a good sign.
Had a d12 years ago good engine -
I plan on taking it to my friends shop and have them look it over and do a blow by test. Thank you
Thank you for the info.. is your's a EGR motor? I thought they added EGR in 04? It's one of the reasons why I'm looking for pre egr.. in my mind, less is more

Pre-emission motors are engine model year 2003 and older.

There’s a chance it’s 1 million 665xxx miles. On these gen 1 Volvo’s, the odometer resets back to zero after a million. Just Something to consider

Is there anyway of knowing for sure? I bet it's 1,665,000..
Which brings me to my second question.. how difficult is it to do an inframe rebuild for these? I've never done one but very mechanically inclined and work on my own vehicles. -
You may be able to hook it to a computer to get the ECM read out. I’m not to sure on the d12 rebuild.HiccaBurp Thanks this.

I plan on taking it to the shop where my buddy works.. he'll hook it up and give it a once over.. they specialize in d12
