Yes the 427 L72 was a dealer install. Non left the factory with that.
The l78, L79 aluminum head engines were marketed as 396, but a 402 4 bolt.
I did not know about that one odd 396 4 bolt from 1965 however.
But 402/396 still have different casting numbers. If it had a 396 casting and a bore of a 402 is one thing. That sounds like salvaging. How would or why would you change casting number? Having a 402 casting and it was finish bore to the 402 is different. Gm employees and Gm corporate had different goals, and documentaion. Just look at the GTO. They were being sold at dealers before corp. knew what was happening. Then the blanton HP lies all manufacturers had. Gm throughout its history had a huge anti horsepower/racing history. -
Have to remember the under 400 cu. for 1969 and earlier less than full size. Weird things were done. A Chevelle was a mid size car. Nova was a compact. Impala full size nobody cared.

Update, had my kingpins installed back in september. Hack job. Had to have them redone 8000 miles later by another shop. First shop said they would refund my $$$$ called yesterday talked to manager and he told me corporate decided to NOT refund my $$$. The hell you say I yelled as I hung up on him. So i got to thinking bout layering up but that takes $$$$ so I did the next best thing I detoured to indy this morning and stopped by corporate office.........Walked out with my refund plus a little extra $$$. The president of Truck Service Inc. handed me a check for refund and I handed it back. Said to much time has passed need reimburse for the repair of your repair. He went to say something and I put my hand up and said pick your next words very carefully. He said how much ? I handed him the invoice and he handed me a check for the correct amount. .....home now and in a good mood !

I will tell any Man today, that if he has a good woman to cherish her, because the odds are against him finding a replacement in his lifetime. -

Edit: fried, not grilled. -
I've seen more 396-375's with 4 bolt mains than 2. Chevys BB casting numbers can be misleading and confusing. The 3959512 or just known as the 512 blocks were 2 and 4 bolt main, and were factory 427's up to the LS-6 454. An easy id for the 4 bolt main BB block will usually have a very large oiling plug, right above the oil filter boss,2 bolt blocks will have a small plug.
My 70 still has its original 512 block, but they are getting pretty rare. And the right casting date ones are worth big bucks to the Corvette numbers guys.
I see you mentioned Baldwin Motion. They would build you a new Chevy hotrod with anything you want, and you got a warranty. That's my Chevelles home dealer where it was sold new,Baldwin,LI,NY.
