I do. Then we added the yellow "safety" bar. Now we have completely enclosed cabs. When I came on, our ladder truck was an open cab, nothing but a windshield. It was a rubber block suspension on the rear and an enormous stack of springs on the front (8v92). A seatbelt was mandatory because some of the RR tracks in town would bounce you right out if taken fast enough.

We didn't have any of those open Cabs but some of the Mutual Aid Companies did

Remember the day that the Chief and I installed the Yellow Safety Bars on our 1st Jumpseat equipped Engine

I think someone said that ‘96 W9 had a fresh engine. Pretty sure I can get a rebuilt 13 speed for $5,000 and rebuilt diffs for $3500 each when the time comes.

I might be the odd man out on this debate but what price do you put on reliability? What does a service failure cost? And a tow to a strange shop? The ELD for our ‘07 cost $800....not needed with a ‘96. I spend probably $1000/yr on ABS problems on trucks and trailers no worries on that front either. You can’t idle a E-truck so what’s your APU cost for your bunk AC......$5000? Doser valves and EGR coolers and other emissions maintenance stuff.....$5000 a year?

You and me are in the same camp on this issue Oldskool

The most reliable and lowest cost of operation truck in our little fleet is an ‘86. 2nd is a ‘98. I would run them both the rest of my life if they wouldn’t rust.

All that may be true, but that truck still ain’t worth 50 grand. Not saying I wouldn’t rather have it than a new one, just I ain’t paying 50 grand for it.
