The waste is the big issue with nuclear, well that and if it goes full Chernobyl or Fukishima. I haven't been able to find a good reliable list of what it actually takes for resources to build a wind turbine but I'm guessing they're not as clean as we're told.

Here's what I think, by 2050 we will(as a society) have killed just about every old growth tree on the planet to build beautiful houses for everybody. I hate to be the hand of doom, but the new primate will have to learn how to breathe carbon monoxide anyway, because there won't be much oxygen left. Also trucking will become shipping because when the ice caps get done melting, we'll(not me, I'll be dead) all be under water. Makes me feel sorry for our children's children, children, C'mon.

California also just passed a law that all new construction must have PV on it.

Also things like rule 21 are already having a huge effect on the capacity of the grid out there.

Monday through Friday I'm servicing battery systems in homes that use zero grid power and they charge their electric vehicles with power that is stored during the day from excess PV.

It's not a thing that you will see in the future. It here now

Living completely off the grid isn't cheap. How much does a full solar system cost? How much storage capacity do the batteries have and how long will they last if there is no sunlight to recharge them? How many years do the solar cells and the batteries last? What is the expected cost of replacing the cells and batteries? If you add all of that up, I'm guessing that it would have been much cheaper for your client to stay on the grid.

The damage to the environment from making and recycling batteries is worse than the damage caused by fossil fuels. If we move away from an oil based economy into one based on batteries to store energy, it will more than likely be much worse than if we had simply stayed with fossil fuels. We have also become a plastic society, and guess what most plastics are made from? OIL derivatives.

I think it's a great idea! They can wipe their butts with their hand and dig for grubs to eat.

Okay, I'll be the devils advocate. Where are you going to get your groceries in the future if you shut off CA? Please think a minute or two before responding.

15 years on the battery modules.

Also, people off grid dont live like me or you. They have led's , mini splits , and super efficient homes. You would be surprised how much you waste. That's probably the biggest problem. Waste.

If you were off grid with a battery system and were being as efficient as possible, you could be money ahead in 5 years.

I'll be in Vermont Tomorrow at another one of these off grid homes and if y'all think you know it all I bet the guy that owns the place I'm going is just a shade brighter. He is living it. Maybe you know better though.

    Who knows....

I saw a great video about all of the things in our world that are made with fossil fuels. I can't find it or I would post it but it was really amazing because everything that we use in our world in some way shape or form involves fossil fuels. There are so many things that you would never even think would involve fossil fuels.

Over many years we will be able to switch over to something else, but this is not going to happen overnight. It's not as simple as saying let's go green and just change everything around. Some people can live off of the grid, but that's not going to happen for the general person for quite some time. Not to mention that disturbing the fossil fuel industry and all of the jobs that are associated with that if it were changed rapidly that could destroy our economy.

I can't remember exactly what they said, but I thought that whatever is involved with the batteries and with the solar almost all of the minerals that were needed have to come from mines in China. Apparently the mining itself is not good for the environment and it would make us almost 100% dependent on China like we were depending on the Middle East for fuel.

Time will tell what happens, but that's exactly what it will take- time.
