How many hours are you required to be "on duty" at a shipper? I understand the concept that you can get detention pay if you stay "on duty" but I've also heard it is better to save those hours on the 70 for driving. That being said, don't regulations require you to be "on duty" while being loaded? How much do you have to count to stay out of the weeds with DOT?
-
No you dont have to be on duty to get detention and you're not required to be on duty the whole time loading or unloading. Show 5mins or so then go off duty or sleeper berth Conserve your 70 as much as possible

Man, bite your tongue. I made squat as a trainee, so soak that up man. I barely kept my bills paid and I had some that were in arrears when I finally started getting full checks. I was barely eating because I couldn't afford it. Food should never be a luxury. And @keen98 made less than me. You're already going 5-6 weeks with no check, why put that suggestion out in the universe? Also, to you and @packersfanmw87 always go into sleeper birth when you are at a shipper or receiver. Your Qualcomm will not give you the 8/2 split option if you went off duty instead of sleeper. If you go off duty and go beyond 8 hours, you can still switch it by doing a log edit and you'll get the 8/2 split. It comes in handy. Always go into sleeper when you park for the night, and for the exact same reason.Last edited: Mar 13, 2019

I don't necessarily believe that throwing more money at trainers will increase the quality of training. From what I understand, our trainers already make #### good money yet there's still a lot of lousy ones among them.
I believe the problem lies in the fact that just because someone is a great driver doesn't necessarily mean that they're a great instructor. I learned this the hard way at my last job. I was a hell of a network engineer but I was absolutely awful at training the two people hired to be my assistants.
I believe there needs to be a more comprehensive curriculum for students incr they're out on the road. I think students should get priority over certain loads that present atypical situations that a student can learn from: .For example, John Deere loads and the challenges they present. Loads with challenging docking situations. Loads with strange check in/check out procedures. Even then you won't even start to cover everything in 15000 miles but you can cover more than if all you're doing is running back and forth between La Crosse and Memphis for 15k miles.MIT and Steelersjunkie Thank this. -
At some point I would love to hook up. I love your point of view. More money won't matter. All companies need to start from scratch. Find people who matter, offer them fair compensation. But don't just throw it out to everyone. Select the ones who matter, and pursue them. Otherwise you'll just end up paying a trainer like mine. He taught me nothing, and he can't do my job over here. Promise you that.MIT Thanks this.

I agree with what you say. The reasons I think the trainers should make more money would be the added responsibility of having a set “ curriculum” and following it. Right that being said Millis is still the best choice of all the training companies. Anyone know why swift teaches their students to pull tractor first into parking spots at Truck stops?El Hombre Thanks this.

I think the problem lies with the fact there is no one training method to follow.
Every trainer does it his own way.
Millis should have one curriculum for trainers to follow
Multi stops, lumper pay etc.
Send them everywhere from NE to S
Every area calls for different trip planning.
I have my favorite spots now just about everywhere
Just my two cents on itMIT Thanks this.
