do you have to use a 53' dry van trailer or is that just the norm. why i ask is, my cousin has a truck and trailer but its a day cab and a log trailer. the the nc commercial drivers manual dosnt say, and i would asume as long as you have to have a cdl-a to drive it you could use it to take the test.

    .
    That will work just fine.

I've seen everything from a single axle pup, to a 45 drop deck, and a 53 box.

I haven't seen or read of any restrictions being placed on trailer size for the test. Doesn't mean there isn't any, it just means I've never seen them.

I've known hotshotters using a 1 ton pickup and a 32' gooseneck registered over 26,000 lbs. to get a CDL A . Only thing is they had a no air brake restriction .

In my school we learned on a day cab with a 45? foot US Mail van. Good Lord those things were heavy! The trucks were 7 speed ex-roadways.

At road test we found ourselves lucky. The State of Maine for class B requires you to do the road test with a dump truck and at least a 20 foot trailer. Heck you can turn circles around a dump with a day cab!

Day Cabs are fine, dont look out the back window to check the trailer, most inspectors will dock you for it. When you take the test the inspector will tell you how to drive. Pay attention to him/her. Drive as he/she says, not as you like. Its his/her idea of how to drive that passes the test. Some want you to race to the street light, some want you to be conservative, some of them want you to be able to socialize while driving (showing your comfortable behind the wheel).

Failing to mention all parts in pretrips can dock you as well. Find the list of items to cover and memorize it. Get in that habit and it will help you from day one!

This job is about safety. Practice it and know it faithfully.

:biggrin_25519:Back in '79, when I got my class A, I used a p/u and a bumper mounted horse trl., but nowdays as long as you use a rig that is simular to what you are using and "has a pivot point". Yes your friends truck will work just fine.

I just did mine 6 months ago with a day cab and 36 foot lowboy. Michigan says the truck should be what you are going to be driving

Having a class A CDL allows you to drive any vehicle combination where the unit being towed has GVWR of more than 10,000 lbs. None of the states specify the length or type of trailer you must use when you take the skills test. Check around the trailer headboard, you should find a plate with the VIN#, date of manufacture, and the gross vehicle weight rating. If it's more than 10,000 lbs. Your good to go.

i'd say the log trailer would work just fine. just find out what the skills test consists of, borrow cousin's truck, and practice THOSE skills in THAT truck before you take the test.
