Greetings, this is my first post an foray into the world of trucking and this forum. So, I had a couple of questions I hope someone might be able to answer:
1. I have to have state vision waiver for my left eye since I have "lazy eye" (since birth) with a 20/80. Anyway, I was wondering if there is a loophole or legal way to bypass the 3 year intrastate probation period before I can obtain an interstate licence, and...
2. If I am indeed stuck having to wait till 2022 to get a 'real' trucking licence, do you guys know if there's a good trucking company that can hire intrastate drivers in Minnesota or Wisconsin?
Thanks in advance.

Your visual acuity and depth perception (Meaning two natural working eyes focusing on a object at any distance from roughly 8 inches to infinity.) Has to be within certain limits I think 20/40 or better corrected.
If you are corrected and still get 20/80 then you are not qualified to drive 18 wheelers. Waivers is something that the FMCSA will have to determine on a case by case base. It will take time for you to get one if they grant it. be prepared to document from your eye surgeon (Not walmart glasses eye doctor, a real honest to goodness eye surgeon with a office wall full of Board Medical this, that, other and god only knows what else bought from the internet in inkjet format)
If you can get one of those to swear on your mother's life that you are safe to drive a 18 wheeler under DOT visual limitations corrected or not, you are clear towards a waiver.
I don't know if your instate intrastate waiver will hold up under a scrutiny of a DOT scale man on a federal interstate in the state in which you only drive. Intrastate still requires a CDL A or B depending on what vehicles and weights you drive at. -
My right eye is 20/20, but the left has been that way since birth. Oddly, my left eye got a 118/120 in the peripheral vision test, while the right got 117/120. Minnesota is sending my the state vision waiver next week, it's the federal waiver that's going to be a pain to obtain in 3 years.
When I spoke with the person on the phone from the Federal vision waiver center, she said I was okay to drive in my home state with the state waiver because they (the federal level) had no say in the state waiver other than not being able to cross state lines. -
You must have 105 degrees of peripheral. As long you have that you are ok, Acuity does not matter, just light sensitivity. When I go to the revenuer to take the small machine vision test hood, there are two LED lights in the upper corners of the eye hood right about 105 degrees above and to sides of your vision. Most people when asked can see it.
In car licensing, you can have one eye and be fine. But not in trucking.
I suggest you get started on the FMCSA Federal waiver. If you are successful within 3 years you should be golden.Intra-verted Thanks this. -
I already did that first and my screw up was thinking the Federal vision waiver was based on the results of your DOT physical, optometrist's exam (if you failed the physical) and non-commercial vehicle driving record. I didn't know about the requirement of intrastate driving experience in a commercial vehicle until after I sent the application in.
The Fed.waiver was denied and I'll try again in 3 years.x1Heavy Thanks this.
