Not quite but close. I applied for a linehaul position. I was told I needed 2 years but another position was available that I qualified for. Hearing the details I agreed to take the job. Literally two weeks pass and they advertise the job with only 1 year experience. I inquired about it again because I wanted to do linehaul from the start. Long story short my boss gets me on the phone with someone from corporate and he goes into detail about why I’m not qualified stating that my experience has to be strictly over the road with zero exceptions and that policy is not bendable. I have called corporate a dozen times trying to see where in the policy is this rule set in stone with no luck of getting a straight answer. NOW here is the kicker. I was sent to another state to help support an account running hazmat shuttle runs terminal to terminal (basically linehail). So in a last attempt to prove I am qualified and a go getter I mention that. The person I was on the phone with basically put their foot in their mouth because they have no argument. If I wasn’t qualified for linehaul why would you outsource me to do so. I was told they will run it by the safety department and they will be in contact. Well two weeks and still no answer or hope with it. They are desperate for drivers on this account which to me is the reason they did all of that. Long story short I want out. I applied to saia and Estes two weeks ago and still haven’t heart anything. From what I gather although food service is way more physically demanding but it would be easier for me get hired then linehaul and make around the same as I do now

Foodservice is tough but it’s not that bad once you get over the fact that driving is only a small part of the job. The biggest problem is that so much can change between different terminals, so it’s impossible to get a realistic idea of what to expect unless you talk to drivers at the exact location you are interested in.

As for money, $70k should be easy at most places if you are working 5 days a week.

As far as a laid back company that lets you take your time...I’m not sure if that exists in foodservice. You’ll get more efficient eventually, but starting out you’ll have to be running hard to make delivery windows and beat the 14 hour clock.

Thanks for the info I appreciate. Any suggestion on the companies I listed? I know you said it all varies terminal to terminal but as far as a company as a whole.

I said somewhat of my own pace I never said I expected to be a complete lazy ### with no timeline. I’m a firm believer in getting the job done “right” and if that means taking a few extra moments to double check things and making sure everything I’ve done was correct instead of getting in the truck and mashing the gas with a “screw it” attitude just to get home or to the next stop faster I’ll do it. One of the biggest problems in this industry is the majority of people don’t care.

Try Gordon Food Service. We have a yard in Allentown. Also have warehouses down south for that future move. North Carolina, Georgia, 2 in Florida, 2 in Texas plus several yards in the south. You can easily make 70+ without killing yourself and average 10 hours a day Monday-Friday.

Really? Been doing food service 17 years now and don't see me going anywhere anytime soon(I'm 45). It's not a job for everyone, just like LTL, OTR, tanker. etc isn't a job for everyone. Some like it, some don't

thanks for the info man I’ll put an application in. Sounds like a good gig. Gordon used to have a dc in my area but apparently sold it to dollar general for some reason

Forgot to ask you how strict are they with hiring being that I’ve only been with my current company two months. Don’t know if that gives me a black eye or not but in my defense I did get jerked around

They closed Pottstown about a year after they opened Imperial(Pittsburgh) DC and Aberdeen,MD. Pottstown was a chain(restaurants) only DC. Imperial and Aberdeen have Chain division. I started on Chain last April, just switched to street accounts about a month ago.
