Are there any companies that still pay by the kilometre or mile in Saskatchewan, Alberta or Manitoba. Seems like most pay by the percentage of the trip.

Owner operator or company driver?
-
Rosenau Transport pays by the Kilometer for Line-Haul.
-
Sorry I missed staring that. I am an owner operator.
-
All the mega companies. Day and Ross, Bison, Monarch Transport and many more. Generally pay mileage and lots have everything included for that.
Smaller carriers do tend to be percentage, they nickel and dime you for everything. Which is where I tend to go. They are more flexible for time off.BigHossVolvo and rustie40 Thank this. -
Here's a list of trucking companies in MB, you'll have to pick your way through.

Off the top of my head, Penner International might pay miles, haven't heard too much bad about them.
How about Federated Co-op, good looking fleet, don't know how they pay.
If you own a Pete you could be a shoe in at Jade Transport hauling tankers, family business, nice folks, again I don't know their pay structure, but they have some real pretty equipment.
Maybe give Payne a shout, a friend worked there for years but I don't know much about them, ask if they pay mileage.
Arnold Brothers might still have mileage runs, worked there for years driving for owner operators way back when.
You'll hear good and bad about them, not the best pay, run hard, blah blah blah, I had my problems with them and had to have a safety meeting or two here and there with the odd terminal manager to smooth things out, was surprised at how many wear clip on ties and how fast some of those buggers can run.
You should look at manufacturing companies with a network of some kind.
Have some friends that had good things going, one runs down to the Carolinas somewhere with automotive electrics to be rebuilt and hauls the rebuilt and new product back to Canada.
The other was working for a cabinet builder, might be Kitchen Craft, can't remember.
Good luck.rustie40 Thanks this. -
Paid percentage is a better way of being paid than mileage. At least if the company is upfront with their rates and what they are giving to you, you don't want mileage pay. Mileage pay companies, especially if they use programs to determine routes, are going to screw you out of money on every trip.
Mileage pay structures for owner operators are going to be very complicated and try to keep you from realizing your earning potential. They'll have "premiums" for everything, and keeping track of them will confuse you.
Flat rate on a percentage is going to be so much easier for you to calculate your income to cost ratio.BigHossVolvo and x1Heavy Thank this. -
I totally agree with Zeviander.
Variable or mileage (or... drumroll... KILLAGE?!) is obsolote. You want nice percentage. Say 30. If you wish to pay me in American Dollars then I'll take that 25% percentage pay flat. (Exchange rate stands at 1 loonie for .75 USD.) -
I agree also,
The one exception to this rule, is LTL. (At some companies)
I get a very good flat mileage rate (all miles), and everything else is hourly. We also do Practical Miles (Pc Miller) vs Household Good Miles (Rand McNally), so its pretty much hub miles.
LTL has a lot of deadhead, so its nice to be able to just drive around, pickup/deliver, whatever and get paid. We also have a very good FSC rate, with no skimming off the fuel cards by the company (IE the PFJ discount is $0.20/gal, the drivers get $0.20/gal, not $0.15/gal and flying J kicks $0.05/gal back to the company).
We also have a couple flat rate pay bonus's for certain city's/crossing BC.
This is the only mileage program I would run under, anyone else, I would do percentage.Canucklehead and Zeviander Thank this. -
Or you could go with what some companies are offering nowadays. 90 cents per mile, they pay everything else. Fuel, IFTA, insurance, plates, yada yada yada. You won't get rich doing that, but there is no arguing at settlement check time.
