The man that owns it now was there as well. He told me they let it get to low on water.... combined with exactly what you mentioned made for disaster. I was told while moving the engine the water surged backwards towards the firebox, my Freind it sounded like a big zipper slowly coming apart when the rivets started letting go. It seems a lot of things were happening in a negative way unfortunately. I can only imagine my insurance if I brought steam into the show here..... it gets ridiculous.

 

@johndeere4020 somewhere I have pictures of that engine behind the mans barn, he told me the rear wheel which was then “D” shaped went about 50ft in the air. May take me a couple days but I will find those pics.

 

I’ve read several articles about it and they said the thought the back was still under water and the front was out. It was definitely low in water and probably operating over pressure. Jerry was there but not in the immediate area. A preventable tragedy.

 

I’d be interested in seeing it. Is it in WV?

 

There was a Minneapolis for sale at a show in Greenup, KY few years ago, but it needed about $20,000 worth of repairs.

 

Alright that was some bad ### stuff right there. Maybe we should all get together and build a steam powered truck.

 

I just read an article with in the last couple years that said the Medina County fair Board it’s still paying for that accident

 

No it was in Ohio. That’s been a few years ago, the man that had it owns a number of steam engines as well as vintage steel wheeled tractors. Trying to remember the name of the area he lives in, just a small country place north of Columbus. I was running Hirail truck on the tracks for a pole job. He and I had talked many times on a forum so he invited me over. I really liked his original Shaker hood with the 92 Detroit in it as well.

 

I wouldn’t doubt it.... insurance gets ridiculous when steam is mentioned anymore. I would love to bring steam to my show but I’m just a small nonprofit show, I do it for the kids, for the older guys who reminisce about being young. If it opens a door for a kid that directs them from a future with drugs.... then my efforts are well worth it.

 

There have been a lot of steam powered vehicles built, Jay Leno has an impressive collection. They’re a very neat part of our history but they went away for a reason, they’re really that efficient when you break it down, plus the weight and danger. They use a fair amount of fuel and water and they require a fair amount of maintenance. I read an article once that said close to 90% of its potential power goes out the stack. A stationary eclectic motor can do a lot of work with little to no maintenance.

There was an old guy around here that I never met but I know his family, he worked for the railroad starting in the 30’s. He told my father in law that when the went from steam to diesel he hated it. He said the steam had a lot more power. But the diesel is more efficient and safer.
