Think of how many cylinders are in a modern diesel electric train, then remember a steam powered train normally only had 2 cylinders ;).

I often think of all the wood left behind by loggers that could be used as a fuel source lol. Wife says I think to much .

He is a younger feller, seem to be a fine young man. He sure put a few new wrinkles in my horn with his knowledge of what he owned. You may even be familiar with him, aren’t you from up in that area?

Yes the man I was talking to spoke about the water. I’m sure I’m rusty on the details that’s been a few years. If my memory is correct his favorite engine was a Reeves.

My wife says I think too much too. Says I think in circles around her, and if those circles ever made any sense, we'd be rich lol.

Obviously a much more extreme example, but this is the sort of thing that is always in the back of my mind when taking my old vehicles out on the roads. Mainly with regards to the age factor of some parts that might usually never fail in normal use. And my stuff is only half the age of a 110 yr old steam tractor. Not to mention decades upon decades of who knows how many under-skilled people "fixing" things.

Another thing often mentioned when the topic of vintage transportation comes up is how designs that were considered safe back in the day, were accepted because of a lack of anything better on the market, and any risk being more acceptable at the time (before ambulance chasing attorneys advertised everywhere).

Reminds me of a story my Grandma told one time (passed away in 2011 at 93 yrs old). Her whole life, she kept scrapbooks with news articles and photos of people she knew. Once she was showing me one, and she landed on a newspaper report of a car accident that took her sister's life in 1937. The crash was just a fender bender. But back then, safety glass didn't exist. She got cut by broken glass and bled to death.

Lol, my uncle Glenn was a POW in WW2. He always said steam needed to come back and put the freight back on the rail lol.
