Buy some houdini lock lube off of Amazon. $9 a can, last for ever if you're only lubing one lock.
Once a month when dry or once every 2 weeks when wet/snow/salty will do the trick.
When I was a school bus mechanic I was responsible for locking up the school bus lot gates. I had one lock that was seized because it was never used. I couldn't even rotate the shank it was so badly rusted. I put 2 squirts of houdini in it and waited a couple hours... That was 2 years ago and the lock still works perfectly to this day. (that is with me applying houdini the way previously mentioned ) -
I see the round, keyed locks on a lot of HHG container loads. They are often exposed to salt air for weeks or months on end, have only seen one that was rusted shut. But, if they are, they have to cut off with a torch, grinding wheel won't do it.
