The cheaper the grease, the more you have to use. It doesn't last as long. I use the red Mystic grease as well. VERY tacky stuff. Holds up well. Lasts quite a bit longer on 5th wheel plates than the cheaper crap. Make sure you use grease that is high temp for the throwout bearing. And any grease used, must have Extreme Pressure (EP) additives.

Hauling 15-20 loads of grain/wk, I greased weekly. Running long haul with the bullrack, every other week. But, if having to be on a bunch of junk roads, then I'll grease the suspension weekly.

Throwout bearing and clutch release shaft get 1 shot each. S-cam bushings, 3-5. Clutch linkage gets chain lube. It is thinner than grease, and better than WD40 or PB Blaster.

These depend on when fresh grease comes out-

    Front springs, 8-15

    Driveshafts- 10-20

    Rear suspension (Ag400)- 30-50

5th wheel plate pivot bushings- 8-12

5th wheel plate- covered well, and put some on the king pin jaws to reduce wear on jaws and trailer kingpin. See plenty that forget to do that.

Like most drivers bathing habits "once a week, whether it needs it or not"

Use Lucas Red and Tacky grease.

As far as the kingpin goes and the jaws, what do you do for very low temperatures? Up here, Temperatures without the wind chill can dip as low as -50 Celsius (-58 Fahrenheit) or even lower depending on how far up north I'm going. It is my impression that it's not the best idea to use just any kind of grease at these temperatures and have in fact even seen some drivers dump a bit of diesel on their jaws instead.

    Any input on that front?

    Cheers

I steam clean my fifth wheel every fall and sometimes in the spring. After its clean I throw some diesel on all the moving parts and work the jaws open and close about 10 times to get it all free moving. I then just apply grease to the top plate and jaws like normal. Sometimes the fifth wheel does get a little stiff in the winter, which I just throw a little more diesel on the underside. I've never had a problem doing this and as far as I know my Dad has done it this way for years. Is it the right way...don't know, but it works.

i find te castrol AGRI grease to be the best, it doesnt fling out of the u-joints as easily.

I have tried all the red and tacky and etc greases, but was put onto this by a driveline guy.

At the sand dune rides, we greased the trucks every morning.

I have observed construction companies where a machine has an operator and a "wiper". The "wiper" is an operator in training who does the daily preventive maintenance on the machine. Of course, union rules prevail.

I've never had to deal with temps that cold before. -20-30*F yes, but nothing like that. I know that you can get thinner grease that should help with pumpability. I'd use NLGI #0 or #00 synthetic grease myself. I know Amsoil sells the #0 grease.

As was suggested by others, diesel would probably be the best, although not ideal. Grease gets cold and stiff. Hard for the hitch release linkages to work properly. Diesel won't do that.

I use to use 80-90 gear oil on the 5th wheel when temps got to about 20deg celsius or colder.Best to keep it warm under the bunk tho.I speced a Holland greaseless 5th wheel on my current truck probably one of the better decisions I ever made.

As far as greasing the truck, once a week regardless of mileage.I also got one of those mini grease guns that I keep loaded with Hi-temp grease and a Lincoln 14v standard grease gun loaded with EP.As been said many times already "grease is cheap"
