People START at those wages, to get their foot in the door, to gain some experience, to learn the ropes. After they get some experience, then they can go to the better OTR companies, or a good local job. But to start out at $48,000? Not going to happen.
I've got almost 20 yrs experience, and I brought home about $36,000 last year. Yes, I could probably make more money, but I'm home every night, like what I'm doing, and who I'm doing it for.

    Hey,
I know what your saying. I really do, but I can't find my self doing that sort of thing, guess its just me but I rather work for what I have than to have things handed to me. Not everyone thinks this way but my wife tells me that is what made me what I am, if I wasn't that way I would of handed in the towel along time ago. That is why I put 12 years in to the semiconductor industry.

I wanted to start this the first time I got laided off. I am going to go for it, hopefully it works for me but I am not going to be happy unless I try. I do things for a purpose, people often just do things because they are new, hell I don't even have a HD televison. (hahahaha)

when I first started driving truck back in 94, there were plenty of jobs, after 6 years on the road I took a local oilfield job and spent the last 8 years there until I was laid off in feb. I took a job with Koch trucking at the beginning of march and have heard of many drivers only getting 800 to a 1000 a miles a week. however I have been getting at least 3000 a week and staying fairly busy
however I have been driving for 14 years and have most of the tricks figured out
drivers with no experiance stand almost no chance of breaking into this industry right now. if I were you, I would wait until the economy improves and the major carriers start hiring again before I even thought of going to school and committing myself to a large cash outlay
something else I had not seen mentioned. it is very expensive to live on the road, there are ways to make it cheaper but they require an outlay of cash for supplys
either way it is expensive, go to your local truckstop and check out their menu's, you might be shocked by their outragoues prices, same with the convenience stores

someone else had a good idea, check with local companies first and see if they will hire a rookie driver fresh out of school or possibly train you, check with whatever local industries are in your area like logging or construction companies

Go right ahead and please keep us posted on your progress . You are interested in dreaming of being a trucker and you will have a career doing what you are interested in -dreaming about it . You're doing it exactly the way others like you do it - without thinking for a minute .

I swear, Trucking is the only industry where everyone thinks they can just jump into it and be successful. I mean EVERYBODY thinks they can just get a CDL and go right to driving and after a few months they can even buy their own truck. I worked in auto parts when I was 18, but I didn't think to start an auto parts company after 2 months of working there. If people don't start opening their eyes and cleaning the ###### outta their ears, 80% of America is going to have their CDL by 2020.

And have accomplished nothing except paying the State for the license and the school for the training, and still yet have nothing to show for it except debt or empty pockets.

Well after this insight, I give up. You know the mistake here was to asking for some advise on learning to drive, Next time I am going to say, "I am looking for people tell me that trying to start trucking is ########## stupid"
