I have a couple questions for all of you drivers out there. I have read this intire post. My Father has driven for 42 years and I know the life. I also know how much you can and cannot make. I understand that the frieght is very slow right now.
I know why and why not about owner operators. I will say that my dad worked his tail off doing this job and did not become a millionaire. My questions are......
Why are you drivers with 1-5 years experience still driving if it is so bad?
What are you afraid of with the new drivers coming in?
Why are you so hatefull to the newbies as you call them? are they not the new generation of drivers?
Why are you not proud of the work you do? because you should be.
Newbies ask questions because they know you understand the ins and outs of this industry. Why would you be so harsh with them?
I ask the 1-5 year drivers because I have found that the older drivers or more experienced drivers do all they can do to help and support these new drivers questions. They do not tell them what to do they suggest the best way they feel for them to go. They also do not get upset with them if they do not listen to there advise.
Yes alot of new drivers are flooding the industry that shold be a compliment to you as a driver they understand that it is a good living. with that understanding comes respect.
Why would you be worried about new drivers?
Were you not a new driver also?
This is not to make anyone upset I just do not understand the hostility towards new drivers from such young drivers themselves.
My dad has always said to me. "Chip i want you to do something other than what i do that is why I work so hard driving. I do understand the day may come that you might have to get behind the wheel of a truck. My best advise to you is make the best out of everyday never turn down a load and always stay loyal to who you are and the company you work for. If you do those simple steps you will always be successful in this dog eat dog world."
I have not had to go this route yet but my time is getting very close. I only hope that when and if I am in your position i can be as supportive to the new drivers as I can because i can not forget where I started.
Most new drivers that are starting out understand that times are tough everywhere. Now is a good time to start if you have the will to do so. Keep in mind to these companies are only looking for new drivers that have absolutly clean records. These are the best young drivers they can get.
They only become great drivers with time behind the wheel. You have to start somewhere.Lonesome Thanks this. -
Very nice post War Eagle,

Nobody is "worried about " wannabes . They aren't going to take anybody's job . The majority of graduates will never get a job . The ones that do will get hired will be hired to replace somebody that got a reality check and abandoned a truck somewhere . Anyone saying now is a good time to start doesn't have a clue what the situation is . The oversupply of drivers increases every day as more trucks get pulled off the road and more students graduate . The bottom feeder companies have taken advantage of this and cut rates back to where they were 30 years ago . Are we supposed to respect anybody stupid enough to accept those rates ? They are degrading the industry and are in the same class as illegal immigrants accepting substandard pay .
-
First of all Rick right now people need jobs period. So these new drivers are supposed to say. No you won't pay me enough. I think not! A job is a Job.
To compare new drivers to illegal aliens is completly off target. They are Americans who need jobs. You have 30 years experience you should never accept the lower pay due to your experience. If you do then well I leave that alone.
People take jobs for all types of reasons. Anyone taking a job that pays enough to feed there families should never have to explain there intentions.
It may be stupid to you but these new drivers may be coming from no money at all, to at least something to feed the family. -
With the miles that a lot of drivers are getting these days, it amounts to no money, or almost no money, especially since the driver has to have money to live on while they are on the road. The miles many drivers are reporting actually getting, you'd be lucky to be able to feed a family on the money they are making.
-
I couldnt feed my dog,.. Let alone a family
You said , YOU READ the Thread?..... Why even go there w/ RickG? Denial, must be a big problem with todays youth. -
Many wannabes with families to support waste thousands of dollars on a useless CDL because most of them will never be hired .That's not only stupid . It's irresponsible . You can easily find a dozen posts from both graduates and experienced drivers that have been trying to find jobs for months without success . Many , many more just disappear not wanting to admit their failure .

Crusher, as you see there are all sorts of people on here. Research best you can on here, go talk to some drivers at a TS that drive with a company you are interested in. You can tallk to some on here that I suggested to you. Weight both sides, but remember that negativity is in any industry and seldom runs any of them.
